Introduction Professional socialization is the process by which individuals acquire the specialized knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, norms, and interests needed to perform their professional roles acceptable (Edens, 1987). People start experiencing socialization with the first day of kindergarten; we watch and observe our classmates and teacher, to help develop the acceptable behavior in a classroom environment. In the following discussion I will explore my personal experiences with socialization into my personal role as a nurse. Discussion Growing up in a middle class, Democratic home, I learned early in life work ethnics. You go to work in rain, sleet, shine, sick, health, and hurricanes. My first job after high school was a cashier, a world of enlightenment opened up at that point in my life. I learned a lot about working with others especially the roles and ethics of various age groups. As a beginner cashier I started developing coping techniques and socialization strategies that currently follow me today, as I encounter new jobs or challenges in my life. I began nursing school at a point in my life that was chaotic, I was getting divorced, my birth father was dying, and I was trying to settle into my role as a single parent of two young children. In Benner’s Stages of Nursing Expertise (2001), I began Stage I: Novice (Blais et al., 2011), amongst my chaotic situation. I knew as a young child I wanted to be a nurse and a teacher, but had no idea what it entailed till I became a nursing student. Coping at this point in my life had been tears and walking away, but I knew I had to do this not only for me but for the future of my children.
