So, when the Party portrays the past a hellish world full of poverty, destruction and slavery - the people will begin to believed the Party has rescued them from this, especially when the party feeds them more lies about all the things they have done to help the people. Memory is also a powerful tool. The people who lived before the revolution would know of the world before and so in turn know the Party has done very little for them. This is why the Party keeps a strict control of things like history textbooks and personal mementos. By destroying records of the past, they're also limiting the memories of those people
No one can control this loss of freedom. People are born and rights and freedoms are instantly lost. Even though Aldous Huxley’s story, Brave New World and George Orwell’s story 1984 portrayed different predictions of what society could be in the future both stories shared a common loss of freedom of their people because of restrictions, the governments overstepping power, and brainwashing techniques. In both stories there was evidence of restrictions that lead to the loss of freedom of the people in their societies. One of the main pieces of evidence in George Orwell’s novel 1984 was the use of constant surveillance of their people with telescreens and spies.
He even isolates himself from his wife, when she asks him "what is to be done" (3.1.44), he replies"be innocent of knowledge" and leaves her out of his plans. In both book parallels can be drawn between the plots. Both tyrants follow different paths but have the same basic goal. The tyrants are power hungry and will do anything to secure their power. The tyrants think of themselves as ultimate rulers and do anything they please.
Orwell warns the modern era of an impending government control that will suffocate society’s freedom through a defined class system, perpetual warfare and a society with suppressed thoughts and emotions. The division of classes must be avoided to prevent loss of freedom. As shown in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, a troubled society with governmental separation of classes results in demeaning and unfair circumstances for its citizens. A defined class system inlays many freedom robbing rights that a person should have. Because of a permanent hierarchy of status and occupation, it is impossible for a lower class member to move up in society.
4. Why history is included in the curriculum? As the great philosopher G. Santayana once said, “those who do not understand history are destined to repeat it.” History teaches us not only facts but also the concept of self-examination of our own history, behaviors and proclivities. History teaches us that those in power tend toward corruption and that those who possess absoloute corruption. History teaches us that long, drown out, protracted wars accomplish little, other than mass suffering, and tend to bleed all nations (involved in such wars) of their treasure, often setting them back decades, or even centuries.History teaches us that if we do not
This can be seen as very similar to the treatment of the people in Gilead, they have been brainwashed to believe what is ‘right’ and the government have expelled anyone who is an ‘unwoman’. However, ‘The handmaid’s tale’ is a dystopia, meaning that it is a time in the future that is seen to be the opposite of our perfect imagination of the future. The fact that the narrative is set in the future means that the story becomes extremely implausible to the reader. With modern technology advancing all of the time, it would be impossible for the rest of the world not to know what the situation in Gilead was like, and thus impossible that the Gilead society has not been saved by an outside country. The story is told through a first person narrative with Ofred, our protagonist telling us about her experiences under the Gilead society.
Agent Smith also drives the post-modern view in the film, mentioning that he was sick of the Matrix, an attempt to rebel and tear down the system. Smith knew that the matrix wasn’t going anywhere, that the machines are simply surviving and nothing more, a very post-modern way of thinking. There seem to be a few points of modernism however. Like the joining of the “freed” humans to form Zion and the want to spread the knowledge that you are in fact being fooled by the Matrix. Also Morpheus stands for modernism in his belief in Neo early on and his dream for regaining control of humanity.
Maione 2 The Party edits documents to favour themselves and hide the truth from citizens. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth, his job is to rewrite and doctor historical documents, effectively changing the past and making whatever the Party says true. One of the Party slogans is “Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”(1). This means that since the party controls the present day, they are able to destroy, manipulate and control the past, therefore they can control and determine the future, which is exactly what
To have such significant secrets hidden from the Tarian society would eventually cause the breakdown of the culture and rebellion would start. The first out break out rebellion started when Vima refused to have her head shaved, once she had announced that sudden statement gradually more people started refusing having their heads shaved therefore ‘joining the rebellion’. If the Governance Companions had answered their questions with a fully explained, reasonable answer this may not have happened. Updated technology on Taris is vital. If they want to prevent the collapse of Taris, they must have everything updated.
