Woojun Kim English 02/13/12 Similarity of North Korea and Animal Farm The Novel Animal Farm by George Orwell shows animal rebel against human and dominating the farm by one greedy animal. After rebellion, instead of human, pigs rule the animal farm. At first, animal farm is going to flourish, but greedy pigs finally ruined whole farm life. Minority’s greed ruined majority’s dream. When I finished the book, I thought this phenomenon is similar to modern communism country North Korea.
Just the Soviet, the pigs are able to establish themselves as a ruling class in the now new society. Symbolic Meaning: Some symbols that were in Animal farm were; Animal farm, the barn, and the windmill.Animal farm was a symbol because it is known as the beginning and the end of the novel and also symbolizes Russia and the Soviet Union which was under the Communist Party rule. Animal farm also stands for human societies in general. It has an internal structure of the nation, with a government (the pigs), a police force or army (the dogs), a working class (the other animals), with state holidays and rituals. The barn is a symbol because this was the place the pigs painted the seven commandments and then added their revisions, which represents the collective memory of a modern nation.
Snowball Vs. Napoleon In George Orwell’s World War II based fable Animal Farm, he explains the troubles a country goes through after overthrowing a leader. In this book, he uses life on a farm as an epic metaphor to life after the Russian Revolution. He shows that after the government was overthrown, the expected, did not happen. Old Major dreams of a nearly perfect world where everyone has equal rights, and he expects such a world in the future. Although Snowball and Napoleon are similar, they are also quite different, and, in fact, because of that deference, Snowball posses the characteristics of a better leader.
The rivalry comes to a head over Snowball's idea to build a windmill. At the final debate about the windmill, Napoleon summonsdogs he has secretly reared to be his own vicious servants and has them chase Snowball from Animal Farm. Napoleon tells the other animals that Snowball was a "bad influence," eliminates the animals' right to vote, and takes "the burden" of leadership on himself. He sends around a pig named Squealer, who persuades the animals that Napoleon has their best interests at heart. Three weeks later Napoleon decides they should build the windmill after all.
The conflicts among the animals and the humans included the defeat of Mr. Jones the head farmer, the bombing of the main farm windmill twice, and the death of Boxer the farm’s trusty cart-horse. The conflicts in the book would be Man vs Man, and Man vs Society. Boxer could have been described as the most sympathetic character in the novel, Boxer symbolized all of the best qualities: dedication, and loyalty. However boxer suffered a major weakness a naïve trust and an inability to recognize corruption. Animal Farm proved the quote because, in order to reach their dreams and paradise, the animals had to encounter death and major destruction around them.
However, Old Major only ends up asserting that man is entirely evil because some men commit evil acts. Nevertheless, the animals show how it is not only men who perform evil deeds. When the animals take over the farm after the rebellion, Snowball and Napoleon become the leaders of the farm and they both enter into a power struggle over the farm. Eventually, Napoleon manages to get rid of Snowball and starts to bring the farm into a state of decay: “They had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere” (pg. 87).
Not surprisingly, the result is not at all desirable and the animals find themselves in fact worse of then before. Orwell is clearly drawing parallels between the events on the farm and the events in Russia after the 1918 revolution. He intends it to be a warning to readers that they should not be easily seduced by socialism. He also strives to outline the faults in communism, and how turning a blind eye and allowing another to control you never works out in your favour. He uses many themes to convey his main points to this allegory, such as corruption, abuse of power and social order.
Conscripted peasants had begun to lose interest, and their welfare was harmed with the conscription of animals, meaning beasts of burden and the like were deposed to military use. Most of the officers had bought their positions for reasons of prestige and glory, meaning that they were inexperienced and not fit to lead armies into war. He, despite the warnings of his advisors, joined the front ranks. Nicholas believed he was doing the right thing, rather than realizing the incompetence of his own aggressive nationalism. This led to Russia being in the control of the German Alexandria, who was hated by the Russian people because of her inability to speak Russian, her reliance on Grigory Rasputin, a mystic who claimed to heal her son, her antisocial, depressed attitude and a general political incompetence to rival Nicholas’s.
‘Animal Farm’ written by George Orwell is a novel where George uses the technique of allegory to demonstrate a series of events that took place during the Russian Revolution in 1917. These events are compared to events that take place in a farm, such as events that arise when the animals in the farm go against Mr Jones, the owner and operator of the farm, and events that arise due to conflicts within the animals. The start of this novel serves as the start of a circle, because of which it is easy to foreshadow how the book will end. Basically via the use of Animalism, George shows how those that revolt eventually turn into a similar rule as the one they were rebelling against, and so the cycle of oppression goes on. The description of Mr Jones’s activities in the first paragraph foreshadows the activities that the pigs indulge in later in the book.
Mr. Jones, the owner of the farm is a model on Tsar Nicholas II, the last Russian emperor. During his reign people experienced extreme poverty and upheaval marked by the Bloody Sunday Massacre in 1905, when Protestants demanding Social Reforms were shot down by the army near Nicholas´ palace. This can clearly be compared to Mr. Jones in animal farm. Jones gets drunk and forgets to feed the animals of the farm who are cold and hungry. However when Nicholas´ own generals withdrew their support of him, civil war arrives in the form of the “BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION “when Nicholas, like Jones, is removed from his place of rule and then dies shortly thereafter.
