I have chosen assignment A. Simple living is a concept that is a bit hard to describe. But it is basically about living a life with more recycling, less trash, less shopping and about creating peaceful meaning with yourself and each other. 1. Give an outline of the attitudes to "Simple Living" presented in texts 1,2 and 3. As described in the first text, which is written by Elizabeth Scott, her attitude towards simple living is that people now do it for one more reason than they used to. Some time ago the "simplicity movement" was all about getting rid of the extra stuff you really didn't need, so you could enjoy the important things in life such as each other. Now a lot of people also choose to live this way simply to save some money. It goes without saying that when you buy less you have more money. She also thinks that living simpler will in the end cause stronger bonds, less stress and families to be less separated than they were before, as quoted from her text "family togetherness will [...] be the end result." Because Judith Levine from text two is a Jew and not really a big spender she found it a bit too patriotic that she ended up spending more than a thousand dollar on Christmas gifts. Her attitude towards simple living is that you should buy what you think is the most valuable for you. Not necessarily the cheapest, for example when you buy organic milk instead of ordinary milk. She also thinks that when you start to live your life simpler, you will begin to look inwards and each individual will get something different out of it. It is usually a spiritual reward of some sort, but she doesn't like the idea of that, because it doesn't really save the world or do any good for others in particular.
