Natalie Crase Period 1 10/17/13 Siddhartha Final Draft In the novel Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse, Gotama, Kamala, and Vasudeva all play an immense role in Siddhartha’s journey to enlightenment. First, Gotama, the Illustrious One, helps Siddhartha realize how he can achieve Nirvana. Kamala, a rich, beautiful women, entrances Siddhartha and teaches him the art of love. Last, Vasudeva, the knowledgeable ferryman, leads Siddhartha to enlightenment, through the way of the river. These three individuals all impact Siddhartha’s life greatly in their own individual ways. Gotama, who has already reached enlightenment, helps Siddhartha recognize that the path in which he desires, must be travelled alone. When Siddhartha first saw Gotoma, he recognized him immediately because of how his body glowed with peacefulness .As Siddhartha talks to Gotama, he comprehends that to become a follower of the Buddha and learn off of his teachings, would not bring him anywhere he wants to be. “That is why I am going on mu way- not to seek another and better doctrine, for I know there is none, but to leave all doctrines and all teachers and to reach my goal alone- or die” declared Siddhartha. After his discussion with Gotama, he looks at his life in a new way and starts in a new direction. In one discussion, Gotoma played an enormous role of Siddhartha’s journey to enlightenment. Later, Siddhartha stumbles upon a village, where he falls in love with a women named Kamala, who agrees to become his teacher. “And if it does not displease you, Kamala, I would like you to become my friend and my teacher, for I do not know anything of the art of which you are mistress.” begged Siddhartha. Kamala was rich and introduced Siddhartha to the town, as well as the lustful desires of mans heart. Meanwhile, she shows him that there was more to know besides thinking, fasting and waiting.
