To What Extent Did The Women Help Odysseus? Without the women in the Odyssey Odysseus would most definitely not of been able to achieve Nostos (homecoming). Throughout the Odyssey many different women help Odysseus, most gave him Xenia (hospitality) which was very important for him to keep focused, healthy and strong, for his weakness’ did overcome him from time to time, so he needed good Xenia to keep him going. In this essay i am going to write about the a few of the main women who helped Odysseus on his journey home to his beautiful and faithful wife, Penelope, in Ithaca. Athene was of course one of the most important people in Odysseus’ life . Athene helped odysseus physically and mentally, buts he was also helped by Athene telling others what to do to enable odysseus to find Xenia. For example, Athena appeared in a dream of the Phaeacian princess Nausicaa, disguised as her friend. She encourages the young princess to go to the river the next day to wash her clothes so that she will appear more fetching to the many men that shall see her. The next morning, Nausicaa goes to the river, and while she and her handmaidens are waiting for the laundry to dry they play ball. Odysseus wakes in the forest and encounters them. All of Nausicaas handmaidens have by this point run away in shock. Odysseus then begins to charm Nausicaa "Are you a goddess or a mortal?" he inquired. "If the latter, your parents must be proud. I've never seen your like in beauty. I don't dare embrace your knees. Could you just tell me the way to town?", this was Odysseus’ saying to himself ‘if i charm her she might help me’. In her honest way, Nausicaa sized him up and saw that he meant no harm. "As strangers and beggars are in the hands of Zeus, I'll not refuse comfort to a castaway." She called back her maids and told them to feed and cloth Odysseus, 'Why do ye run away at the sight of
