Water is used to nurture Annie, and to cleanse her so she can stand independent of her mother-daughter relationship and her home of Antigua. Though the first initiation of water in the novel may symbolize a strong connection between Annie and her mother, water is thereafter applied as a voyage that breaks this familial bond. Annie John is the initiation of a young girl’s journey to independence. Water first appears in the novel when Annie John is a ten year old living on the coast of Antigua. A ritualistic bath scene takes place between Annie and her mother: “My mother and I often took a bath together...It was a special bath, in which the barks and flowers of many different trees, together with all sorts of oils, we boiled in the same cauldron.
Questia states, “Despite their vital role in Ancient Greek and Roman society, women were not considered full citizens and in most instances required a guardian – their fathers, and later husbands – to represent them” (“Women in Ancient Greece and Rome”). As his poem progresses, Homer presents female characters in different aspects, demonstrating that women should not be confined to the standard they were held in that society. At the beginning of the book, women are first introduced as being loyal, faithful, and under complete servitude to men. This presentation of women demonstrates the view of women at that time. This is evident in the treatment and actions of Penelope and Calypso.

As Douglass was running his errands for his mistress, he overcame this challenge by befriending the white kids in the neighborhoodThis way, he is able to have them teach him. One way these two situations are similar is that the authors receive help in achieving the goal to learn. Miss Sullivan helps Keller understand language whereas
Firstly, Luisa influenced Antonio a lot through her counsel she played the role of a wife and kept the family and the vision together. This is why Antonio refers to their marriage as the best decision he ever made, this unfortunately cannot be said for the Bingham’s. Barry Senior’s wife did not make an effort to keep the family together or provide counsel. Sometime all a broken family needs is the gentle touch of a mother. If she had made that effort maybe all the controversy between Barry junior and his sisters would have been prevented.
Looks Can Be Deceiving People always try to look for the best in each other, but subconsciously we are judging them. It is a natural instinct we use to ensure our own survival, as Edwin Rolfe and Lester Fuller said “Don’t Judge a book by its cover”. Soon people in the story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, will know to think twice. The story starts with Mrs. Adela Strangeworth, a friendly old lady who loves her home for being the sweet little town it is. She is a respected member of the community, beloved by everyone.
People like Mr. Summers, Mr. Graves and Mr. Martin being in charge of the lottery suggests that they are above everyone, which is not a characteristic of a democracy. What does Mrs. Delacroix’s extra-large stone say about the loyalty and logic in “the Lottery”? What does the large stone represent? How might she justify the killing of Tessie? Mrs. Delacroix, obviously a friend and neighbor of Tessie, who just moments before [the stoning] was laughing with Tessie about her forgetfulness, and reassuring her that she was fine for her tardiness.
