Prostitution, a “profession” where people are paid to be engaged in sexual activities is a very old but interesting feature in the history of civilisation and is also an important problem for modern society. A lot of countries have offered solutions but almost none of them were satisfactory. Can legalised prostitution in Mauritius ever be safe and free from exploitation or should laws against it remain? In Mauritius, with prostitution being illegal, many violent crimes against prostitutes might go unreported every year, as they are too frightened to report the crime to the police. Rapists are well aware of that vulnerability and target sex workers more as they know that the risk of them being denounced is rather small. Decriminalizing prostitution might be a starting place so that prostitutes can protect and defend themselves; they will probably no longer hesitate to report cases of rape as there will no longer be that fear of being arrested. In other countries such as USA and Canada, a lot of women work as legal prostitutes in brothels. In fact most of them reported that they felt safe in their job as they knew that police and other workers were there to protect them. Moreover, each month they have blood and STD tests to ensure they do not pass on diseases to their clients. If Mauritius followed these examples then decriminalizing prostitution might be a step forward to a better society, as there would probably be a decrease in the number of HIV cases and other STDs. However a lot of people do not realize that legalizing prostitution is in other words legalizing the degradation of women. These women basically sell their bodies for the pleasure of men who are willing to pay. Prostitution presents women as nothing but reusable sex machines for men.
