Her intentions may be pure as she wants the best for Phoebe, but it doesn’t deny the fact that she’s also doing that for her own self preservation. Secrets that are kept for one’s own, selfish intention cause pain to other, no matter who they are. A different time secrets caused pain to others was when David comes back after days of being away with a pregnant girl named Rosemary. When Paul’s trying to convince his mother to let him stay home from school he describes her as talking calmly and with red eyes from crying (276). Norah is obviously hurt that David has come back with a pregnant girl as she assumes that Rosemary’s pregnant with David’s child.
Describe and explain how the society of “The Book Thief” impacted on Liesel. “The Book Thief,” an amazing and descriptive novel written by Marcus Zusak, gives a particularly good insight into the poor and vulnerable Germans of the Nazi German era. Liesel had the extreme hardship of witnessing the world of Nazi Germany turn to chaos, with almost everyone who she loved dying or suffering as a result. Liesel was affected immensely by the society, both physically and mentally, and her opinions were changed throughout the book. From the beginning to the end of the book Liesel has had to face many challenges, resulting only in herself being a good person and showing the good side of Germany.
The Silent Damages of War Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Combat Stress Disorder Deborah Briscoe American Military University Abstract Battle sometimes carries with it scars that go deeper than the naked eye. It is at times these invisible wounds cause the most damage. Many have fought hard to understand and name these unseen wounds in order to help those who struggle within their grasp. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Combat Stress Reaction (CSR) are two such named silent disorders. They attack their victims much in the same way interrupting the everyday life of all those around it.
Geraldine Brooks’ novel, Year of Wonders the various characters portrayed that survives the traumatic incident, namely the bubonic plague, result indefinitely significantly changed. The plague greatly affects these characters at both emotional and physical levels, initially impacting them in a harsh manner however with time these persons adapt to the situation and being the ‘lucky’ ones they surface transformed as a new community. Anna Frith, the main protagonist and the narrator of the novel is supposedly the character who has changed the most, along with Michael Mompellion changing drastically as well. Anna Frith is emergent as an oppressed woman with a limited view in this world however with the conclusion of the novel it is obvious how radical her change is from a ‘timid girl’ to a ‘woman who faced more terrors than many warriors’ and this is surprising as women in the 17th Century were considered no more than what their husbands were identified as. Through this it is derived how rare Anna’s characters change is in contrast to the social norms at the time.
Also, the effectiveness of the first person narrative is that it establishes the narrator’s channel of emotions due to the betrayal of her lover. In addition, this brutality caused upon the lady would enable the Victorian society to witness the label of a ‘Fallen women’ truly had on a lady, destroying her life. Overall, Rossetti successfully uses a first person narrative, signifying to the readers the stress she now faces in daily for not being ‘Pure.’
Experiencing PTSD After a Traumatic Experience Experiencing a highly traumatic experience can create major psychological issues for people throughout their lives. This is particularly evident when the loss of “one’s own personal identity is directly correlated with the severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)” (Collura and Lende 137) and the absence of personal freedom, including control of their environment. Additionally, when people wear uniforms, obey orders, and undergo regular inspections, the chances of recovering completely are greatly diminished. Thus, surprisingly, due to the unique environment of concentration camps and the intense abuse these people suffered “they often have symptoms and problems afterwards” (Carlson
In the story, “A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson,” by Rowlandson, Rowlandson, breaks down the cruel experiences she had to go through in order to survive all the hardships. She was captive in a war, where she had no way to escape. Rowlandson states, “Now is the dreadful hour come, that I have often heard of (in time of war, as it was the case of others), but now mine eyes see it.” By sharing this comment, she is able to show us how life was really like during the war, and how much people suffered. Not only did she suffer while the war was occurring, but the fact that she had lost her baby in the war devastated her. She felt as she had lost a part of her life.
The parallels of these two devastating wars are begging to pile up, yet there are some key differences. I will go into detail on the similarities, the differences, and how the civilians viewed the war. Both of these wars resulted in the death of many innocent men and women, American soldiers, and forgiven military forces and they shall be remembered for honorably serving their nations. Both the Vietnam and Iraq war we started under false presidencies. In Iraq
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder We live in a world raged with war, hatred, rapes, loss, love, trust and peace to name a few. With continued threat of nuclear war, murder to include mass killings of innocent people (children), and increased mental illnesses life can be difficult for people to find their balance especially after suffering a traumatic event. The past has taught many to hide the negative and show the positive. The old fake it until you make it concept. The past has taught that it was almost shameful to show weaknesses and difficulties in a person’s life, especially when the persons issues may reflective negatively on the family.
Everything we see and go through got two sides negative and positive. Likewise Holocaust do have both positive and negative side, had the holocaust had not happened then the world might have to suffer it in future. Since, it happened already the loss of those innocent life, leaves a painful memories to those families and let us visualize how shameful and rich on sin are some human being that lived and some still do in this world. And, also prepared us how it will effect us and helped us to deal such situation and deal through it. Though holocaust has left lot of hole in people’s life, it has brought many different races together under the same roof, and brought changes to a people’s thought about religion and a community.
