SPart 1 (1.2 & 1.2) – Duty of Care 1.1 Explain what it means to have a duty of care in own work role A duty of care means a person in a specific role has to ensure that others who are in his/her care are not harmed in his/her duty. This includes appropriate attention, watching out for potential hazards, preventing mistakes or accidents, and making wise choices about steps undertaken in a role. A duty of care involves; * Responsibility * Offering help & guidance * Safety/Protection * Promoting positive reinforcement * Promoting hygiene * Social/Emotional wellbeing * Observing the children ensuring development is on track * Making sure the child is safe within the setting * Supporting children who may not be as able as other children Meggit et.al (2011) states that ‘A duty of care involves an obligation that a person in a specific role has to ensure that others are taken care of and not harmed during a particular task’. If the children would like to walk along the stepping stones we allow them to do so but they hold our hands so that if they were to fall we are there to catch them and avoid injury. 1.2 Explain how duty of care contributes to the safeguarding or protection of individuals Having a duty of care should guarantee the safeguarding of children in my care.
