She later started robbing and killing men sequentially earning the notoriety of being the first female American serial killer.
She killed her parents because they were to worried about her life, and set up the scene where they were killed to lead to believe that Cathy was murdered. Cathy then changed her name and began to lead a new life. She then started to manipulate men for their money. She did this by taking pictures and using them for blackmail if the men did not pay her. Many men fell for this and in my opinion she became very powerful in a sense.
I think not knowing this just adds to the psychotic part of the killer. This adds for an overall effective ending too. From the author’s stand point there is an internal debate to why this person wants to kill someone he openly omits to loving. Serial killers are the group of people who kill, kill, and kill over a long period of time without ever being caught or stopped. Serial killers are generally cunning, manipulative and know the difference between right and wrong but dismiss it as applying to them. They are not capable of normal emotions such as love and generally react without considering the consequences of their actions.
O’Connor’s use of imagery and Laurence’s use of diction create two distinct characters. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” we are introduced to the misfit, an escaped murderer who later on kills the grandmother at the end of the story. In “Boys and Girls” Laurence gives us a character known as “the father”, we are not given a name but instead his behaviour throughout the story. He to commits wrongly actions in murdering not only injured horses but healthy ones too. “The girl is not surprised to later learn that her father has recaptured and killed the mare” (Korb).

This causes us to ask ourselves if the social constructs we have since created are a subconscious attempt to further suppress the need to kill. The people as a whole have made murder into such a horrible idea that not many people attempt it, for fear of being punished. However, a serial killer, who kills people for fun or for his personal gain, definitely deserves the death penalty. The punishment meted out should fit the severity of the crime. The death penalty should continue in order to “eliminate” those who do not contribute positively towards society. Firstly, the death penalty serves as an effective deterrent and helps in reducing crime, knowing that they could lose their lives. Secondly, it is true that death penalty is irreversible, but it is hard to kill a wrongly convicted person due to the several chances given to the convicted to prove his innocence with the appellate systems in place with the existing justice system, otherwise why does every country in the world have one?
