Critical Analysis In “The War Against Boys” the author, Christina Hoff Sommers, stated that times are changing and boys should “watch out” in school. She states that girls are starting to be more benefited in school then boys in the educational system, that girl aren’t considered the “second” sex anymore, and that girls are statistically better than boys in academics. I personally agree that times are changing and that boys aren’t getting any special treatment and girls are on the same level as boys, and that they also are better in school then most boys. This to me has a lot to do with that growth gap that there is between both genders, girls start developing at a much earlier age then us, thus letting them learn things at a much faster rate
Bill Nye says that most students are distracted by the opposite sex because they are worried about looking good and making a good first impression on the opposite sex. This could be right for two students out of every twenty but then those students are also not doing what they wanted to be doing at college; getting a good education so they can get a better job. The fact that only a very few students are distracted by the opposite sex doesn’t mean that Baldwin Wallace should make a significant change for the rest of the student
Another girl in the group was a girlie girl because she went to an all-girls high school. Although there was no pressure from the opposite sex she was constantly surrounded by messages telling her how girls should act and felt pressure to conform to that. She mentioned that at the all-boys school down the street if a boy didn’t conform to social norms he was disrespected or called named such as gay or a tool. While there are several “rags to riches” stories that serve to encourage the members of the lower class to work hard and achieve their dreams, much truth lies in the fact that the government does not provide enough opportunities for them to do so. I would recommend revising the school choice provision of the No Child Left Behind Act in order to enable the mobility of students to schools located outside of their district. It is for the purpose of labeling peers and deciphering which children are inferior, it is the social aspect of schooling. Lastly, the propaedeutic function teaches a minimal amount of children to manage the population to that the government can continue without being challenged. Assess sociological explanations of gender differences in education (20 marks) Exams results for GCSE and A level have shown that girls are doing better than boys even in the traditional male subjects like maths and science, although boys are slightly improving, they are not improving as fast as girls are and this is dues to many external and internal factors. An external factor of why girls are achieving better than boys in education is because there is now changes in the attitudes, ambitions and roles of females in society. Sue Sharpe’s (1994) did a study on working class girls in the 1970’s and found that girls main priorities were love, marriage and family. She then did the study again in 1990’s and found that attitudes of females have changed as girls now believe a career and being independent is important. Sharpe’s believe this could be because of the changing attitudes of society in general towards women and the impact of feminism.
This essay will assess the extent to which educational policies have been meritocratic. Meritocracy is where a pupil’s ability, rather than their class background, income, ethnicity or gender, determines the school they go to and the grades they get. So something based more around achievement and not ascription. Before the Education Act (1994), children of different classes and backgrounds all received very different educations. The parents of children from wealthy middle class backgrounds (bourgeoisie) could afford to send their child to public and grammar schools to receive an academic education.
The education the children receive is usually based off of their class as well, so it would be usual for a middle-class white child to attend a decent school that will teach him/her what is right and how to succeed. Unfortunately, in thier adolescent years, girls and boys are influenced to take classes that are deemed appropriate for their gender. Most students in parenting or home economics classes are female. Males densely populate the agriculture and mechanic classes. Susan Jacoby wrote “When Bright Girls Decide That Math Is a Waste of Time” She speaks of how math and science are considered masculine subjects. Jacoby feels that this stereotype causes smart girls to under achieve.
Society thrives on the philosophy of allowing children to do what they want when they want. When in reality these students are often are acting up or failing grades to get attention from parents and mentors. Neo-Scholasticism allows students to become internally motivated. Students who have internal as well as external motivation to finish school will be less likely to drop out of school. While, factors such as constant absentness, unwanted behaviors, and low grades influence drop-out rates, school that have stricter guidelines and repercussions for the factors might make students think twice about their actions.
