February 26, 2012 Jennifer Symonds Week 5 Essay Assignment College Comp. II 1020-031 Kevin Munnings In “Senior Picture Day,” by Michele Serros, it talks about the need for a young lady to look normal like her best friend. If only she didn’t look so Indian because of her nose, she would be the prettiest senior picture taken. The narrator of the story goes through some trials and tribulations as a teenager to feel and look normal like everyone else. That is what she longed for and eventually what she gets. The Protagonist of the story is the narrator whose name we never know. She meets who she thought was her best friend in the 7th grade named Terri. Terri came from a rich family and background and moved to Rio Del from the Washington area and went to Valle Junior High halfway through October of her 7th grade year. It was apparent throughout the story that the narrator held a little jealousy towards Terri because she had things that the narrator would never have such as contact lenses for her eyes and expensive, popular clothing. There were a couple of very slight metaphors such as when the narrator made mention of “wiping the egg from my eyes.” This is a figure of speech to say that when we wake up in the morning we sometimes have sleepers in our eyes and wiping the egg from our eyes means getting rid of the sleepers. One other metaphor that was used in the story was when the narrator said, “Man, Terri’s mama made their whole life like an afternoon commercial.” Terri’s mom always had pudding pops and juice in the house for after school and other snacks that the narrator was not accustomed to unless watching it on TV.
