DEHYDRATION SCI 241 When too much water is extracted from the body, a person has the risk of becoming dehydrated. Dehydration can be caused by many things and can be very dangerous. The body is made up of two thirds water, the brain being 95% water, blood 82%, lungs 90%. This percentage just shows how important water is to the human body. Many Americans, actually, up to 75%, have a mild form of dehydration. This is due to not enough intake of water. Many people do not even know if they are dehydrated because of such mild symptoms, but this is still very severe to the body. One reason water is so essential to the health of a human body is because of water, nutrients can be carried through the blood to the cells. There are many other functions that water performs besides the carrying of nutrients through blood. Water is the body lubricant; it helps and lubricates bowel movements. Water can also relieve constipation. It also serves as a lubricant around joints. Water can also be a big prevention factor in the world of diseases. Drinking the correct amount of water a day can actually lower the risk of both colon and bladder cancer by around 50 percent. There are many signs and symptoms of dehydration ranging from mild to severe. The beginning signs of dehydration usually begin with dry mouth or the urge or feeling of the need for water. Less urine output and more of a yellow color in the urine will usually follow. As the body attempts to hold as much water inside as possible, eyes will stop making tears and sweating will stop. A higher form of dehydration can show symptoms of muscle cramping, nausea, usually followed with vomiting or diarrhea. Heart palpitation and light headedness can also be signs of dehydration. Feeling groggy tired, or “out of it” is a symptom of dehydration. Muscle
