Saving Mr. Ugwu The Nigerian civil war was a three-year ethical and political conflict in the 60’s. The conflict was a result of cultural and religious tensions between the Muslim Hausas and the Southern of Nigeria, Igbos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_Civil_War. Lin Anderson tries to give an account of the hierarchical tensions a man is exposed to in the short story ‘’Saving Mr. Ugwu’’. The short story ‘’Saving Mr. Ugwu’’ is written in 2012 by Lin Anderson. The short story circles around our main character Mr. Ugwu who belongs to the Christian Igbos, which is one of the more dominant tribes in Nigeria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igbo_people. Throughout the story, we are told that Mr. Ugwu is hired to do the dirty work by the white rich men. Mr. Ugwu and his family have moved places a lot because of his job, and they are now living in the working Hausas. Mr. Ugwu describes the place where they live as “godforsaken”, “uncivilised” and “barren”. The hierarchy plays a huge role where Mr. Ugwu and his family live. The white rich men are the one who are in control of the region and the one with highest influence. When Mr. Ugwu says: “The company has been good to him, he reminds himself” (page 2 line 41) he reminds himself that he should remember to be thankful for having a job, getting paid and most of all, be thankful for his family has a place to live. ‘’Mr Ugwu crosses to the window, thinking he hears a drop of rain against the louvred glass’’ (page 1 line 1) this could be a symbol of, when Ugwu smells the rain he is instantly reminded of home, which probably is Lagos, a place full with
