The FBI reports for 2008 shows that the numbers of violent crimes dropped 11.6% in the city of Detroit. From 2000 to 2004 Detroit’s rate has dropped 23% drastically. In 2007, the city had the sixth highest rate of violent crime among the twenty-five largest U.S. cities. FBI reports In 2010, city of Detroit neighborhoods were not listed as among those in major cities with the 25 highest crime rates in the U.S. as reported by neighborhoods. Detroit recorded 308 criminal homicides in 2010, a 15.4% drop from the previous year’s count of 364.
80% of the days in 2010 were in the “good” range and only one day was in the “unhealthy” range. Hazardous waste is also considered to be very good when compared to other counties. The amount of generated and disposed waste in Orange County landfills has dropped consistently over the past 5 years. This is due to an increasing number of resident disposing of their household hazardous wastes at the appropriate local collection centers. In addition, the number of pounds of recycled material that was collected increased by almost 95%.
In Abilene, TX the crime rate per 100,000 people was 91.5 in 2009. The drop is not as significant as it was in Albany, but you could say crime was on the decline in the metropolitan area of Abilene, TX and Albany, GA. The area of Abilene, TX has had a steady decline in the crime of robbery since 2007 according to the UCR. The area of Albany, GA has gone up and down for the crime of robbery since 2007. The reason for the difference in numbers could be a number of factors.
A startling 293 murders were reported in 2010 in Los Angeles and 32 murders for Long Beach and yet it is even more shocking to know there are far more forcible rapes that occur in both of these areas. I would think that population size, diversity and other environmental factors have something to do with the differences in these numbers. The murder rate seems to have decreased while forcible rape increased in both cities, with an additional 630 incidents in Los Angeles and an additional 102 incidents in Long Beach. On the other hand, for the past several years, crime rates have dropped continually. The Los Angeles Police Department reported in 2008 that
New York has been known for its crime rate, with a population of 17,999,657 and 99.8% of police departments reporting, there were 761 murders in 2009. The biggest difference between the crime rates in the two cities in the size of population. Even though New York has more murders, the numbers have steadily been reduced thanks to zero tolerance policy in New York. Between 1990 and 1997, the number of murders in New York has dropped from 2,262 to 767 which is 66% drop in the murder rate. In 1997 there were actually the fewest murder numbers in New York since 1967.
The city of Baltimore has had 3,336 robberies in 2010 . Baltimore has a total area of 5,833 who actually will report a robbery. While the crime rate dropping is a positive thing, the actual numbers of people who report the crimes have decreased that means that this decrease will allows more crimes to be committed without anyone being responsible for the acts (U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau
Alcohol can put this sort of development to a stop, which puts the young adult at a much higher risk for addiction, depression, violence, and increases the chances of suicide. Having the drinking age set at 21 lowers the overall amount of alcohol consumption. There was a study back in 2002 to prove this. The results showed an 87% decrease in alcohol consumption with a higher legal drinking age. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) did some research in 2009 and found that nighttime drivers’ percentage on the weekend with a BAC of .08 had dropped from 5.4% back in 1986 when there was a lower drinking age, to 2.2 %.
The overall decrease in juvenile arrests for violent crimes for 2008 was less than any year in 1990s. There had been gradually a decline in juvenile arrest for violent crimes between the 1990s to around the year 2004. Puzzanchera (2009), “Juveniles accounted for only 16% of all violent crime arrests” (4). Since 1994 arrest rates have been in steady decline. The majority of arrest differs by gender, race, and the area an individual reside in.
In 2010, drug abuse violations comprised 12.2 percent of all arrests and 14.9 percent of all Part II offense arrests (PCCD, 2012). Juvenile crime has been in a steady decline according to the 2010 report, but it does not show the true face of crime because it does not account for crime that is committed without being caught. In 2010, reported offenses totaled 931,606 in Pennsylvania. This is a 2.5 percent decrease from 2009 and both Part I and Part II offenses saw a decrease from 2009 (PCCD, 2012). Weed and Seed was an initiative by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency that takes an approach to community improvement through the use of crime reduction activities.
As statistics go, the news inside Texas prisons seems good: Violence is down, fewer weapons have been found, sexual assaults have dropped. Even the use of pepper spray is down from last year, and that usually means more calm inside the slammer. But one number is way up: Eleven convicts have been killed this year inside prisons, the most since 1997, when 10 prisoners were killed. Last year, just three such homicides were reported. Prison officials say the near quadrupling of the murder total appears to be an anomaly without a single cause — a deadly uptick that neighboring states say they haven’t seen, though they have seen increased violence overall, which Texas has not.
