WEEK 2, INDIVIDUAL WORK ASSIGNMENT To: Jorge Villarruel From: Kim Johnson Date: April 24, 2014 Re: Week 2 Assignment, some history on forensic science. 1. What was Francis Henry Galton’s major contribution to forensic science? Englishman Francis Henry Galton was the first to undertake the definitive study of fingerprinting and he developed the first method of classifying fingerprints for filing. In 1892, he published the book “Finger Prints”, and it contained the first statistical proof supporting the uniqueness of his method of identification.
Einstein treated matter and energy as exchangeable. Albert Einstein became famous for the theory of relativity, which laid the basis for the release of atomic energy. In 1905 Albert Einstein formulates Special Theory of Relativity. He established law of mass- energy equivalence; through his famous formula E=mc² Einstein calculates how the movement of molecules in a liquid can cause the Brownian motion. Using Max Planck’s quantum Theory he formulated the photon theory of light and explains the photoelectric effect.
Paul Popenoe, a eugenicist, opened the first marriage-counseling center in the United States. The American Institute of Family Relations opened in 1930. Popenoe’s ideas on eugenics were not as staunch as in previous years. He still believed in sterilization for those classified as “unfit,” mentally incapacitated, or even those living in poor conditions. But his marriage center focused on the needs of bringing together people of strong physical and mental backgrounds to help them build strong, healthy families.
The influence of the Maimonides perceives as a positive influence upon Jews expressing their beliefs contemporarily such as the study of the Torah. One of the characteristics of the Mishnah Torah is its focus on all times, places, and covers all Jewish Law. As opposed to Hebrew Scriptures such as the Torah, which focuses on Jewish laws within the context of one time and place, such the book of Exodus, encompasses the holy land Israel and takes into account the destruction before the temple (Israel is under independent Jewish Kingdom). Therefore, Maimonides’ writings take into account the Jewish laws after the destruction of the temple and taking into account the numerical dispora. The Misnah Torah was written as a supplement of the Talmud; as a result, Maimonides has articulated the Mishneh Torah to be bases of all Jews need to know about the Talmud.
I. Bean Bag Isotope II. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the mass properties and relative abundance of isotopes for the “bean bag” element and to calculate the atomic mass of this element. III. Pre-Lab Questions A. The first possible property of electrons and protons that led to their discovery was their “positive rays,” positively charged streams of atoms generated in gas discharge tubes from J.J. Thomson’s experiment.
Wilhelm Roentgen & His X-Rays Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physicist, was the first accredited with the discovery of X-rays. Although he was not the first to bear witness to their effects, he was the first to intentionally and systematically study them. Ivan Pulyui, William Crookes, Johann Wilhelm Hittorf, and Eugen Goldstein were some of the first few to begin research on X-rays along with Roentgen. He wrote an initial report "On a new kind of ray: A Preliminary Communication" and on December 28, 1895 submitted it to the Wurzburg’s Physical-Medical Society journal. This was the first written report of any kind on X-rays.
1. Explain how medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exploits the magnetic properties of the nucleus. MRI’s rotate the nucleus of an atom, producing a magnetic field. During a MRI, a person is placed between the poles of a strong magnet. The magnetic field permeates the tissue and causes the nucleus scale magnets in the tissues to rotate.
Explain why Jews played such a prominent role in the cultural life of Germany in the 1920’s. Jews played a prominent role in the cultural life of Germany during the Weimar Republic. Their talents were wide ranging and they excelled during this era in architecture, music, art, the classics, theatre and cinema. Although making up only 1% of the total German population, the Jewish sector placed education as a high priority and their wealth enabled them to enjoy the cultural side of life. Erich Mendelsohn (1887 – 1953) was a famous architect.
This bestselling novel by Jodi Picoult that is told by the sides of all its characters touches on many ethical issues; one of which is preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), otherwise known as “designer babies” or savior siblings. Is it ethical to design and conceive a child that meets specific genetic requirements to use to save a life of another child? As a parent one will do anything for their child but how far is just too far. A savior sibling can donate umbilical cord blood stem cells at birth and later in life they can donate bone marrow as well as being a potential organ donor for a matching sibling. In preimplantation genetic diagnosis embryos are screened for the healthiest ones fee of any genetic diseases.
After graduating from Wheaton in 1948 with a degree in chemistry, she pursued her dream of going to medical school. She applied to both John Hopkins and Harvard. Without Avery knowing at the time, Harvard didn’t accept any females into their program but John Hopkins did. When she got into John Hopkins, it was without a question that’s where she would attend medical school, in fact, her inspiration Emily Bacon went there too. Avery had experienced a major culture shock from attending an all women’s college to finding herself be one of only four women in her class at John Hopkins.
