1.1 The key aspects of legislation which relates to my own role and responsibilities as a teacher are making sure I adhere to the Equality Act, making sure I treat all learners fairly no matter what sex, race or religion they may be. I have also got to adhere to the Data Protection Act as we keep information about our learners i.e their addresses, national insurance numbers and phone numbers. Also as part of my role as a teacher I have to follow to the Protection of Children Act, meaning I have to make referrals when necessary and keep a log of all private conversations I have with the learners. 1.2 As part of the duty of care as a teacher, my responsibilities for promoting equality is so that I encourage the earners to give others a fair chance so that everybody can feel valued. My responsibilities for promoting diversity is so that everybody knows it is OK to be different. By promoting equality I am eliminating discrimination, making the learning environment a happier place for everyone to work. It is important that I recognise that I need to treat all learners as individuals and respond to them in an individual manner. Individual and group diversity needs to be considered in order to ensure that everybody's needs and requirement are understood and responded to. 1.3 My first job as a teacher in the Lifelong Sector is to identify the needs of existing and potential learners. I need to identify their abilities by getting all learners to complete initial assessments in both maths and English to see what their capability is and to see what level they will be working towards. With potential learners we have a brief interview to establish what qualifications they currently have.
