The first thing that I would change would be to enforce harsher punishment for crimes so as to defer young teens from making the same mistakes again. Now-a-days a young person can commit a crime, and get a small punishment from the juvenile system and be out the next day. They eventually learn that if they keep committing these crimes, then they will keep being able to get away with it with only a small punishment. Kids these days are not stupid, they will eventually catch on to the fact that they are not being punished nearly as harsh as they should be and that alone will tell them that they should just keep doing it. One example of this is that more police officers can go onto the police force, so that the young person sees them everywhere and believes that they mightcatch them. Specific deterrence says that if a single person is punished strongly for onecrime, then they will not commit this crime again out of fear of punishment. For example,a youth who commits a crime is put into a program. Crime prevention strategies that aresituational aim to tell young people that the benefits of crime are not worth the eventual punishment. This is to let people know that the punishment always far outweighs thecrime.
So, while politicians talk about the “desperate prison crisis”, we should think about where the actual desperation really lies. The problem is that we need to stop incarcerating vast amounts of non-violent offenders for 25 years to life. Non-violent criminals with minor offenses should not be dictated under the three-strike law. Even with this simple change in the three-strike law, our society would save more money funding other alternatives such as prime prevention strategies. These strategies include programs designed to reduce repeat victimization in domestic burglary, theft, and any other violence.
I would support the Dream Act, At least it gives the minors a chance to make it right and follow the law and get on the right path of following legalization here in the U.S. If we don’t give them a path to citizenship we will be dealing with a bigger issue of employers still hiring illegal immigrants and we will have more immigrants not paying taxes and will exploit the system. They come to the U.S. for a better life than their country could provide. So why are we making it impossible for their children to go in
“Three Strikes” or Habitual Offender Comprehensive Exam Whitney Polen CJ 602: Comprehensive Examination Kaplan University July 31, 2014 Dr. Patricia Drown Introduction The “three strike”/habitual offender’s legislation needs to be consistent through all of the states. What it will take to understand why some offenders feel they need to repeat this criminal activity, having legislation that will work against these repeat offenders, because not all states are on board with the three strike law. Once someone is labeled a habitual offender and they commit a crime there are increases in the penalties they can be assessed. The type of crimes these offenders commit can also be ranked in a more serious class than if a first time offender had committed it. The sentencing can also add more time when a habitual offender commits a crime.

Instead of staying in a darkened room, the commanders should be training their officers on how to combat this action and help actual reduce the crimes not cover them up. They need to make sure that officers know the importance of CompStat and how it benefits their department. CompStat can be a great tool, but it must be implemented and used correctly and information cannot be falsified to give data that is wanted. If the information is correct than it can help us ensure that our police department are working to actually reduce crime not just to make their department look good. This information can be used for many different reasons and if individuals knew that police departments were doing everything in their power to actually reduce crimes some areas would not be so scary to live in or
Social Trends By: Swandonna Rone Class: Criminology Instructor: David Di Bari Date: 04/07/12 One of the main things I think will always impact the criminal justice system is a person Socioeconomic Status (SES). SES is often measured as a combination of education, income and occupation. SES affects overall human function: our physical and mental health, the neighborhood in which we live, our daily activities, and our access to resources. Those that posses a low SES are the one more likely to commit crimes, because they are trying to get more than they have or afford, and don’t care about the risk of their wrong doings. I think that a stricter Crime Control will suit the crime problems in the future.
Incarceration further reassures society and the victims that a criminal will receive a fair punishment. Moreover, incapacitation or incarceration protects society from career criminals, and criminals who pose a serious threat to members of the community, but the fact of the matter is by doubling the prison term for armed robbery is not going to correct or solve the underlying issues that force one to commit the act of robbery and in return, the prison systems will continue to
Punishing and following up with rehabilitation through community supervision can help prevent crime. Punishment and community supervision should be based on the type of crime. If the appropriate sentence is issued upon a minor, it can help prevent them from future criminal activity. Each act of violent crime is different and every minor has a different back story. Once the crime is committed, the next step should be having a social worker and therapist speak with the minor.
