ROAD TO HELL ANALYSIS The case “Road to hell” is a perfect example of different cultural perspectives in a situation. The case is based on the final meeting between two characters: John Baker and Mathew Rennalls; Baker is an English expatriate with twenty three years’ international experience in Caribbean Bauxite Limited in East Asia, Africa and Europe. He preferred to work overseas because he considered himself experienced in relating with local staff of the multinational company. His last three years he had been working as a Chief Engineer in West Indies, where he had more difficulties than in any other country to relate with local people. On the other hand, Rennalls is an engineer and future successor of Baker in his position, he is a well-educated and well-connected young local very proud of his origins with growth ambitions inside the company. The purpose of their last meeting was for Baker to explain Rennalls he would replace him as soon as he went to accept his new position abroad. The meeting could not ended up worst, Baker explain to Rennalls his strong technical points and his constructive comments at important meetings, all of which made him the ideal candidate to undertake the position. He also wanted to explain Rennalls that while their relationship was amicable he always felt and invisible barrier between them. Baker offer advice for the position because he explained that expatriates would continue to be at managerial positions in the company and Rennalls should be able to get along well with them; he offer an example of a discussion between Rennalls and Jackson (another expatriate that complained about Rennalls´s attitude) to make his point. He went on to compliment Rennalls for his and of his people´s ability to close the commercial environment gap because they only had had 50 years’ experience compared to English 300
