Brian Fong Mr. Johnson Period 2 3 February 2012 Herbert's Innocent Sergeant Rossano Gerald was not arrested but stood on the highway Oklahoma with a dismantled car and his now weeping, traumatized 12 year old son simply for being guilty of America's original sin. They were born black. In the article "Hounding the Innocent" by Bob Herbert, he explains to his readers the inhumane racial profiling towards Blacks and Hispanics that has resulted in numerous stops and frisks. However, statistics show that only a quarter of the composed of actual arrests. With the aid of Herbert's anecdote on Sergeant Gerald, he further argued his claim in a resenting tone but his own hatred toward officers interfered with the balance of criticizing facts…show more content…
His relentless tone was not an effective way to illustrate his purpose because of the contrast between hi s tone and the innocence of victims of racial profiling. Following, his descriptive language states his early viewpoint on law-enforcement authorities and their ethnic profiling as "sadistic" and "disgusting." Herbert assures the readers that, in fact, law-enforcement utilizes racial-profiling in their actions which explains his portrayal of innocent Blacks and Hispanics as well as police officers. He claims that young Black and Hispanic males "are stopped, frisked, and harassed in astonishing new heights." In his explanation of the 45,000 victims of New York Police, he doubts it and suggests his own figure in the hundreds of thousands. Unlike articles such as "Racial Profiling or Good Police Work," Herbert's article is not very ideal as it doesn't further expand on his argument on why these stop and frisks may occur. In the conclusion of the article, he then uses words such as "spare me" and ends it in "what a surprise" to close his thoughts in a manner that leaves the reader with a profound distaste for law
