Jones Averett University Y4101 IDS 301 Principles of Adult Learning Assignment 1, July 28, 2012 REVIEW OF ARTICLE “THE LADDER OF INFERENCE” The Ladder of Inference is a system designed to show how assumptions can cause miscommunications. This system is also designed to build the skills of reflection and inquiry. It also shows us that we need to slow our pace and spend more time reasoning things through and thinking about the true facts. Unwillingness to slow our pace and think things through could lead us to make wrong conclusions, which could cause conflict with other people who may have drawn quite different conclusions. The Ladder of Inference demonstrates why two people can observe the same event and describe it differently; they are paying attention to different details. The ladder of Inference helps you to draw better conclusions, or challenge other people’s conclusions based on true facts and reality. You can also use it to validate or challenge other people’s conclusions.
