Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty, love and lust. In Homer’s version, it was said that Aphrodite was the daughter of Dione and Zeus. According to Hesiod’s version, Aphrodite rose out of the white foam created when Cronus cut off Uranus's genitals and threw them out into the sea. She was then carried across the sea, to Cythera and then to Cyprus, by Zephyrus, the god of West wind. There, Aphrodite was welcomed by Themis' daughters. They dressed her up in elegant clothing, embellished her with precious jewels, and then took her to Olympus. Aphrodite is always described as a gorgeous, perfect, eternally young woman. She had a perfect body. Aphrodite dressed elegantly and loved to wear jewelry. Her eyelashes were always curled and she had a constant smile on her face. Even though she was as beautiful as she was, it was said that she was a weak and frightful goddess. Her purpose as a goddess; arousing desire to humans and gods, as well as beasts and birds. She was connected to the death and rebirth of human beings and nature. Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus, the deformed god of fire. Hephaestus was offered Aphrodite’s hand in marriage by Zeus and Hera because they felt awful for disowning him, and they didn’t want Aphrodite to get into any more trouble. Aphrodite only agreed to the marriage, so she could remain a goddess. Hephaestus made Aphrodite a golden girdle, which was a magical belt that would make anyone who wore it irresistible. Hephaestus was always working in his workshop, and so he couldn’t watch over Aphrodite all the time. She was unfaithful to him, and cheated on him with a lot of the Gods. Hephaestus was ignorant of the infidelity because Aphrodite would bathe in the sea and become a virgin again. Aphrodite fell in love with Ares, Hephaestus’s brother.
