Samson fell madly in love with an enticing woman, Delilah. The rulers of the Philistines offered her eleven hundred shekels of silver if she could lure him into revealing his weakness to her so they could then attack him with guaranteed success. She fails three times before she says to Samson, “ How can you say ‘I love you’ when you won’t confide in me?” (Judges 16:4, 15). He finally tells her that the secret of his strength is his hair, and if it were to be cut, he would loose all power. Delilah used her beauty and manipulative ways to steal his thrown and gain silver shekels for herself.
Laura Dumpson January 2011 Global AP Jackson Per. 7 Aphrodite Aphrodite is the Greek Goddess of beauty, love, and sexuality. Hesiod’s Theogony, it claims Aphrodite was born when Cronus cut off Uranus’ genital and threw them into the sea. From the sea foam (aphros) arose Aphrodite. Gods feared that because of her beauty, jealousy would disrupt the peace among them leading to war.
Apollo was born on the little island of Delos. The reason Apollo was born here is because Hera became jealous and pursued Leto (his mother) from bringing him into the world on earth. So Leto was forced to go to the barren island of Delos to have her twins, Apollo and Artemis. Artemis was Apollo’s twin sister, his mother was Leto, and his father was Zeus. When Apollo was born a group of swans encircled the island, and now swans are one of his most sacred animals.
Danae, the royal virgin princess was the mother of Perseus after Zeus had visited the virgin by disguising as a shower of gold. Another hero would be Heracles, he was birthed in similar circumstances to Perseus, and was taken away to a foster family far away. This was another element to a hero narrative. There is little explanation about Heracles, however he fights the beasts and claims a kingdom, another important factor to a narrative. Orestes and Brasidas, were birth in different circumstances compared to Perseus and Heracles.
My name is Hera, the Greek goddess of marriage and child birth and patron of women and this is my story. I am the jealous type and I take out my anger on the lovers and offspring of Zeus and also the other women and children of Earth. I am very vindictive and conniving. My symbols that represent me are the Milky Way, Peacock, cow, crabs and other creatures with shells. There are also plants, perfumes, gems and colors that represent me too, some of them are; Lily, Poppy, Rose, Jasmine, Diamonds, Pearls, Royal Blue and Silver.
They came to an island of women and then Salmydessus, which was fraught with harpies. The Argos got rid of the harpies and the King Phineus told them of the smashing cliffs and how to get through them. They soon arrived at Colchis, and King Aeetes put Jason through many tests which his own daughter got him through, only because Hera had asked Aphrodite to help and put a spell over the daughter to be head over heels for Jason. After Jason got the fleece he took the daughter to go home, but abandoned her for a different princess once they arrived in Greece. | Analysis – How is this story important in showing cultural values and lessons?
Psychiatry, or medicine of the soul (psyche means soul in Greek), and psychology are derived from this mortal female who was in love with Aphrodite's son Eros. Since Eros was immortal, his mother prohibited their relationship. They began seeing one another anyway, albeit in the dark. Psyche was not permitted to ask about his name or look upon his face. She defied him and lit a lamp, which caused Eros to flee.
Myth The Legend of Pegasus The symbolism of Greek Mythology is second to none. We all remember Medusa, Perseus, Athena, Mount Olympus and of course, Pegasus, the white winged stallion, carrier of Zeus' thunderbolts. This is the legend of Pegasus, the winged white stallion, bred from the love of Poseidon, God of the sea, for the beautiful, yet ill-fated virgin, Medusa, caretaker of Athena's temple. Poseidon, so taken with Medusa's beauty, seduced her within the walls of Athena's temple. Angered by this offense, Athena, unable to punish Poseidon, turned her vengeance on Medusa and transformed her into a horrible monster with serpents for hair and a face so gruesome that the sight of it turned any living creature to stone.
Although women occupied an entirely different position in society compared to men, they too held a certain sphere of influence and power; they simply exerted it in ways that were distinct from men’s strategies. By examining the character of Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, one can see just how women exerted their power and influence in The Odyssey and to what ends. Penelope uses clever cunning and sexual charm to toy with men’s emotions and to meet her own needs while she is waiting for her husband to return from battle. The types of strategies and her relative success in using them will be examined in this essay. Athena is the daughter of Zeus who helped Odysseus throughout his quests.
In Medeas case, very. I would say that the first moment Medea was used for was when Jason first laid eyes on her. As is says in the story when Aphrodites asked her son Eros to cast a love spell on Medea, “...Aphrodite ask her son Eros to cast a spell upon Medea, causing her to fall in love with Jason.”(from story Jason pg.269) In my opinion, she was just used for love, she was forced into it. As we all know, you can’t force love. Second would be when Jason was sent to go get the golden fleece, he used Medea for her sorcery to get protected through all the obstacles.
