“Relativist ethics are unfair.” Discuss. Relativist Ethics are not unfair in today’s society, as they change depending on the situations and are subjective, dealing with smaller details of actions. In the modern day, situations all have factors that can give them good or bad motives. For example, the subject of abortions differs depending on the person. Some may say that it should be allowed because it allows rape victims to abort an unwanted child. They would argue that she was impregnated against her will, therefore, they hold the right to abort the fetus before it developes too much. However, absolutists would argue that abortion is wrong no matter what because it is taking a human life. They would also argue that they are taking a life before it has a chance to experience the world. Relative Ethics allows people to understand why they take the actions they do. It allows them to explain their reasons. This contrasts to Absolutism where everyone who follows has to follow the same rules and laws. Cultral backgrounds and religious views make absolutism unrealistic. Right and wrong is a reflection of people’s emotions, and as emotions vary, they can never have the same views on subjects. For example, a murderer could justify his actions as being "God's will" whereas many people would say that it’s wrong; not because of the moral rules, but because of moral values. Not everyone is religious and so will not accept his reason for murder. Natural Law has also not been proven so there is no point in pursuing the belief in them. Some may argue that murder, genocide, rape etc are universally wrong, but not everyone believes that. Everyone holds their own opinion to them, even if a minority believe that it is right to carry out such actions. Protagoras and Aristotle believed in Relativism, and said that people have their own individual perspective on things. What is seen
