Today although online course enrollments are up, the failure and completion rates are higher than in a traditional classroom setting (Schreck, 2006). Buedouin (2002), suggests that online learning can take place without participating. However, the research by: L. Nagel, A.S. Blignaut and J.C. Cronje (2009), indicates that participation is necessary to be a successful online student. PARTICIPATING STUDENTS…show more content…
(L. Nagel et al., 2007) The participating students seem to be more highly motivated and have a higher level for mature communication. (L. Nagel et al., 2009) state in their study, those students who posted all the time had greater success. For example, the number of posts from a failing student averaged 30, whereas a person of distinction averaged 94 posts. READ-ONLY PARTICIPANTS Read-only participants refer to individuals who do the online assignments. These students log on to the classroom website. They read and study the material and assignments. However, the read-only participants do not participate and interact with other students in the classroom discussions. Read-only participants do not contribute in anyway. This is the most apparent when their assignments require a learning team environment. The students have elements such as procrastination, isolation, and/or unfamiliarity with technology. (L.
