Nevertheless, it was true, and it became equally true for his younger brother. Through some quirks of DNA, my ex-husband and I--two average-appearing adults--spawned genetic celebrities: square-jawed, pearly-toothed, mahogany-haired, 6-foot-5-inch slabs of guy flesh whose casual glance seems to turn many otherwise articulate young women into babbling Barbies. I'm not proud of this. Wasn't the motherhood manifesto for women of my generation to abolish stereotypes? Weren't '90s men supposed to be fully functioning members of a newly designed home team, a mutually supportive, multiskilled unit?
Hazel, who is the main character in the story titled “Raymond’s Run,” has aspirations she discovered about herself towards the end of the story. Hazel doesn’t individually discover these aspirations but it’s the other characters in the story that brings these foreseen goals to the spotlight. As Hazel gets ready to cross the finish line in her race with Gretchen, who is a competitor, many aspiring aspects come to mind. Her first encounter comes with her brother Raymond. In the story it quotes, “And I’m smiling to beat the band cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied, or even if I’ve won, I can
Some sort of connection is established between them at the first eye contact: “I shut mine again and right away opened them, slowly, and he opened his, slowly, and our eyes met, and it seemed as if we had woken from a single sleep, from the dream of our entire lives.” (p. 1, l. 14-17) The narrator feels pretty devoted to this Roy Spivey, and it’s like time is standing still. The double use of slowly states this allegation. The following lines of the short story pretty much sets the relation between the narrator and Roy Spivey. “Me, a tall but otherwise undistinguished woman; he a distinguished spy, but not really, just an actor, but not really, just a man, maybe even just a boy.”(p. 1, l. 17-18) There is no doubt that she doesn’t feel like they are equal. She even finds it hard to define what he is, that places him further above her in the hierarchy between them.
She’s ready to give up running to coach Raymond because she has many other things she can be good at. She is no longer so insecure about herself that she has to be the best runner. In the House on Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros, a unique style of writing is used to show various themes throughout the book. The abrupt and disconnected way Cisneros writes conveys a child-like mindset which contrasts the adult issues being discussed in order to show the theme of growing up too fast. Throughout the book, examples are presented to the readers of growing up too fast. Esperanza sees Sire and his girlfriend Lois. Often, she hears them “laughing late” with “beer cans” and such, and is warned by her momma, “Those girls are the ones that go into alleys”.

I love the thrill of ever game, every week, every season making an impact and actually having meaning and purpose. Utah, Boise State, and all of you other mid major conferences quit whining and man up. The way you do that is strengthen your schedule and stop playing an unimportant season. I have always loved the Cinderella story, but not to the point of jeopardizing the character of the college football nation. Until there is a playoff structure, the anticipation of the top 25 every year will keep me running wild with emotions of anger and thrills.
