After the Race Exhibition at Cosi I found myself looking at race in a much different way. I feel that the showing offered several excellent displays that really had opened my eyes to the whole concept of what race really is. From my experience at the exhibition I realized that the idea of race is something that we as a society have socially constructed. Before attending this event I based race mainly on the color of one’s skin. I feel that many of us (not just me) judge people’s race based on their skin color. However, after the showing at Cosi I realized that the color of one’s skin is not related to a specific race of people, but simply is related to the intensity of the sun in the area of the world where a group of people lived. Knowing someone’s skin color does not actually tell you anything about a person. Thus, basing ones race to their skin color is not right and is something that we as a society have constructed over many years. They also teach us what clothes to wear, what food to eat, what holidays to celebrate and what behavior is appropriate in various situations. Who we are is largely determined by these and other learned experiences. We are much more than the sum of our genes.” This display truly had me thinking that we are not so different after all. In fact we are all very much alike. Who we are is determined from our families and people we surround ourselves with. Thus, race is something that actually does not exist. But something we have made up. Had we not socially constructed race, then race would have never existed. Which brings me to the last point that I have taken from this exhibition that is there is only one race, the human
