A proverb (from Latin: proverbium) is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. They are oftenmetaphorical. A proverb that describes a basic rule of conduct may also be known as a maxim. If a proverb is distinguished by particularly good phrasing, it may be known as an aphorism.
Proverbs are often borrowed from similar languages and cultures, and sometimes come down to the present through more than one language. Both the Bible (Book of Proverbs) and medieval Latin have played a considerable role in distributing proverbs across Europe, although almost every culture has examples of its own.
According to the dictionary a proverb is defined as a concrete and short saying, which is often repeated. These statements usually express a truth of some kind that maybe philosophical, spiritual or then practical. The word proverb is said to originate from the Latin word proverbium, meaning concrete statement.
Proverbs can be classified into various types such as the metaphorical, maxim or aphorism. Many writers make use of a proverb to enhance their work, or then simply to concretize what they wish to say.
In fact, in most cultures of the world, one of the important aspects of their literature are the maxims and aphorisms that are valuable lessons, and yet poetic to the ear and heart. Apart from the common proverbs that are known around the world, the ones regarded for their high-teaching value are the Japanese proverbs. They were generally penned or spoken by the spiritual masters and teachers and formed a apart of the learning inheritance.
Irish proverbs are practical and fun to read. They do tend to tilt towards harsher and more sarcastic tones, sometimes at the cost of deriding some neighboring cultures.
