A Critical Look on the Effectiveness of Prophylactic Bracing Abstract I took four different scientific journals from various authors and websites. Then came up with supporting facts as to why I think that bracing is the correct way to go about to prevent further injury to the ankle. It is through these web journals that I discovered many facts I had not known. The journals brought to my attention about allergic reactions, cost, bulkiness, effectiveness, and mobility. There were different studies on basketball players, soccer players and American football players that were put into my thought when coming up with my decision. It compared it to tape, taking half of the injuries of that with players that actually had tape. Also as far as skin problems go, there is no need to worry about them with bracing. Braces contain no Elastoplasts or zinc oxides which often cause allergic reactions. Typically these Elastoplasts are found with zinc oxides in tape which can cause allergic reactions among some athletes. Callaghan goes on to list some key points comparing braces to taping, listing the advantages and disadvantages of both. (Callaghan, 1997) “ANKLE TAPE AND BRACES: Restrict range of movement, Reduce re injury rate, Improve proprioception. Limitation of movement is lost after exercise. No negative effect on most performance tests, little negative effect on other joints. BRACES: Minimal expertise needed, reusable, readjust able, washable, and non-allergic. TAPE: Individually applied, less bulky than brace, athletes' preference, Caters for unusual anatomy. ” Some points that Callaghan pointed out was the fact that the braces are indeed reusable; they are readjust able and non-allergic. These facts go on to support why someone might choose bracing rather than just your typical tape
