Stretching is a general term used to describe any therapeutic maneuver design to lengthened (elongate) pathologically shortened soft tissue structure and thereby increase range of motion.[5]. Stretching exercise is important to restore or increase the extensibility of the muscle-tendon unit, purposely to regain or achieve the flexibility and range of motion (ROM) required for necessary or desired functional activities.[5]. Stretching exercise also enhanced physical performance of an individual such as, increased muscular strength, power, improvement in physical functioning, including walking, running speed and jumping abilities.[5]. Stretching can be done by several methods such as static stretching, ballistic stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and others. For additional information, based on literature review “Stretch or Not to Stretch” static stretching is the method that has the least associated injury risk and the safest and the most effective method in stretching. While ballistic stretching was considered less desirable and beneficial since it is believed that more tension is created in the muscle, thus, increase the risk of injury.[3]. As for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), also might increase…show more content…
There is not sufficient evidence, strength, quality and generalizability for us to ignore or discontinue the routine of stretching before exercise. Even more and better research needed to determine the proper role of stretching before exercise. As shown, there is a little research has addressed stretching as the strategies for injury prevention. In my opinion stretching before exercise help prevent from having muscle cramps or trauma. Hence decrease the risk in having further
