Priorities in Incidents and Emergencies Case Study 1 Daisy is 82 years old has advanced Dementia and attends a Day Centre for older people with Dementia. The Centre is open from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon and they offer a lot of support and activities for people during the day, they also provide freshly cooked lunches. They have ten service users each day, two of whom are wheelchair users. All have varying degrees of confusion and need a lot of supervision. There are 3 carers on duty each day with the manager and a secretary working in an office. One lunchtime a carer comes running in from the kitchen shouting that the cooker is on fire. At the time you are in the dining room, there is one carer in the bathroom with a resident, the manager has gone out to lunch and the administrator is typing in the office. You are the most senior carer on duty, what are you going to do? Possible Priorities & Responses The first thing I would do in this situation is raise the fire alarm to evacuate everyone out of the building. At the same time I would get somebody to close the kitchen door to prevent the fire from spreading and to prevent smoke inhalation I would also get them to phone the fire brigade. After raising the fire alarm I would help service users evacuate the building in a safe way so that they are not at risk of being left in the building and getting any injuries or even death due to smoke inhalation or burns. Whilst evacuating the building, if I came across a closed door I would feel the door with the back of my hand. I would not touch a metal handle because it would be very hot. If the door was hot I would know that the fire was burning in the room behind it, as a result I would not open the door because if I did I would add oxygen to the fire, causing it to flare up. If I found a door that was hot I would start to look for another escape
