David Thurman 2/17/14 English 122 Prejudice Still Lives On In today’s society some people think that there is equality amongst people that live in the United States of America; I think that is a false statement. Although some people do consider everybody to be equal in what they can do and what they can accomplish, however there are still a lot of people who believe that certain groups of people are only going to end up in jail, or have a lot of kids and depend on the system to take care of them, or end up committing crimes to provide for their families and their selves. As in the short story called, “Bodega Dreams”, written by, Ernesto Quinonez on page 178. The English teacher, Mr. Blessington, an upper-middle-class person, who thought highly of himself, told students that the boys were only going to end up in jail and the girls were going to end up hooking. The students he was talking to was predominantly of Latin decent. That prediction is not the right thing to put into young kids mind. It is irresponsible of Mr. Blessington as an adult, to say to teenagers or anyone for that matter. He should be teaching the kids that anyone can do anything they want if they put the effort and determination towards it. This is the type of teacher that should never be allowed to teach in schools period! On the other hand, there was another teacher by the name of Mr. Tapia, who was the total opposite of Mr. Blessington. Mr. Tapia encouraged students that they could become successful at anything they wanted to become in life. He wanted the students to believe in their selves and not in what Mr. Blessington was telling them. Mr. Tapia said things like this to the students, “You guys are smart enough to know that it’s up to you to become what you want to be”.
