Licensed Practical Nurse Versus Registered Nurse I have chosen nursing as my career field. In this paper, I am comparing the careers of licensed practical nurse and registered nurse careers. I will discuss necessary training and education, skills needed, potential earnings, and availability of job openings. After this comparison, I hope to be equipped with the knowledge of each job, in order to make the best career decision. Excellent communication skills are needed not only to interact with the patients but to relate diagnosis and treatment plans with patient’s families and other staff members. RNs must be able to solve problems. They need to be able to combine several pieces of information and draw conclusions. The overall pay for RNs in the United States is slightly higher at $31.10 per hour and $64.690 per year (“Registered Nurses”). Illinois has a large employment opportunity for RNs at 20.8% growth per year. The availability of jobs is increasing in Illinois with 4,238 job openings being anticipated each year until 2018. Home health care and nursing homes will offer the most new jobs for RNs due to patients being released from hospitals earlier and requiring more long term care. This assignment has been very beneficial in that I have compared two careers that were similar, yet different, and focused on pros and cons.
