Angelika White Professor Mavromates Writing Assignment 2 04/11/2015 Political socialization is defined as the process by which an individual acquires values, beliefs, and opinions about politics. Acquiring beliefs and opinions about politics is a lifelong process, starting from early childhood and through an individual’s life. The process of acquiring our values, beliefs and opinions apply to even greater ranges than just politics. It applies to people as well, and whether or not you agree or disagree with their beliefs and values. Throughout life, you’ll gain opinions about many topics in politics, including gun control, abortion, gay rights, sexuality, war, and the economy. Political socialization is very important for a few reasons. A society having healthy, political opinions can help into the transition of the new and politically-conscious generation. Political socialization is a lifelong process, but there are certain times when your opinions, values, and beliefs are peaking. The early socialization you experience during your early adulthood has a greater impact than the socialization you might experience in later adulthood. A young adult’s mind is being shaped during the teen years and twenties, leading them to start developing more of their own personal beliefs and values. In the 21st century with technology on the rise, people like Millennials are steadily shaping their political views more liberally. Agents of political socialization are factors that have a significant impact on an individual’s socialization to politics. Agents and institutions of political socialization can include family, friends, school, social media, and your religion. There can also be more personal factors that shape your political opinions, such as race, sex, age, ethnicity, and economic status. Personally, I identify myself as a Democrat.
