The source of the word pharmacy is unknown, for sure. However, many believe it originated from the Greek word, “pharmakon” (Chronicle 1). Pharmacists, over the many, many decades, have evolved the field of medicine. The change has occurred slowly from the middle ages when powders and spices were being mixed by the pharmacists to cater the general public, to the mechanically massed produced and individuals’ medications being precisely compounded by the pharmacists of today. Pharmacy is, has been, and definitely will be very important for centuries, and maybe even millennia, to come. In the eyes of some, earnings are the most important part of a job. Those people would be interested to learn that some pharmacists make an annual salary of up to $100,000 or more straight out of college (2). The average yearly earnings of pharmacists is $93,500 (United States 6-7). On the lower and less common end of the earnings scale, there is the small, yet still respectful, wage of less than $67,860 (6-7). A bit higher on the “food chain”, is the yearly salary of more than $119,480 (Chronicle 2). Generally, hired pharmacists work about 40 hours a week; whereas, self-employed pharmacists may work 50 hours or more weekly (2). As of 2006, there were 240,000 jobs for pharmacists, with the majority – approximately two thirds – in chain and community drug stores. One fourth of the openings were in hospitals and the other eleven twelfths were in other miscellaneous types of pharmacies such as labs, clinics, and government agencies (3). The Main responsibility of a pharmacist is to fill patients’ prescriptions from their doctor. A common mistake is that this is all that they do, and just filling bottles all day, admittedly, sounds pretty easy.
