Recent activity in the Bush administration has led to widespread criticism on how the government perceives torture. Torture is a word that carries negative connotation in nearly every part of its usage. Alan Dershowitz states in his article, “Is There a Torturous Road to Justice?” that if the government is going to practice such methods of interrogation, they should not hide it from the public, but rather make it legal in a way that allows for the protection of our nation. As citizens of a government that keeps us safe, it is not our business to know what steps the government takes to protect us. We are to keep the peace among the nations of the earth because that is our belief as a people, but we must know our enemy, we must know their intentions and what they wish to carry out.
After I formed a rough draft my thesis I went to the library for book sources and online for web, newspaper and journal sources. I read and looked through my sources while writing down useful information and good support for my paper. My example I am using from the Huffington Post is a Dick Cheney article that is about an interview with the former Vice President in which he defends the interrogation methods such as water boarding used on alleged terrorist.
He impugns us to do what is morally right, and to not be afraid to take a stand against injustice. Henry David Thoreau’s position on civil disobedience is neither morally irresponsible nor politically reprehensible. Civil disobedience is technically illegal, and is punishable, but who is ultimately responsible for determining what is right or wrong?
