There are some really strong contradictions in Devlin's article. He says that “helping students appreciate and welcome differences in culture, racial heritage, and personal identity, are increasingly hard to teach.” Yet Devlin’s solutions offer up ideas like enforcing a “dress code”, having gender segregated classes, making the students where I.D tags so they would be easily identified by cameras, having more drug sniffing dogs, and random spot checks of cars and lockers. Turning the schools into a police state does not set a good example for tolerance. Dress codes do not show tolerance. Gender segregation is not going to teach men and women to work together as
I’m not sure if he was trying to get the college students to be his primary audience, or if he was trying to inform other educators about the discipline of college students. Since John Silber had some harsh words to say about some college students, it’s obvious that he was trying to find a way to make sure that educators were aware of this problem. It was clearly stated that John Silber thought that students should have been punished for the actual crime, not just put on probation over an accusation. As John Silber said in the article, “Colleges have a right to establish judicial codes to assure civility in the classroom, on the campus, and in residences. But the administration of these codes should not give criminals sanctuary from the law.” With this thought in mind, it came to my sense that the title of this article basically summarizes to whole discussion.

This article basically says that high school sports are not killing the academics but the students/athletics are killing it themselves. It explains how school sponsored sport programs should be seriously be thought about being cut off. Some people believe that sports are far more firmly fixed in American high school than in other countries but the test scores finds no support. Ripley bring up that athletic coaches are typically lousy classroom teachers. However, athletic coaches gain additional opportunity for communication by helping the student succeed.
Why can't it be 100% though? John O. Hayward, a senior lecturer in at Bentley University seems to think otherwise. He believes that Anti-bullying laws takes away the first amendment. Hayward believes that the laws will "prohibits students from engaging in controversial speech , whether on school grounds or off school grounds." He also believes that teens and children does not know the difference between "true" threats.
