Communication requires expressing feelings and thoughts to a receiver. Once the receiver has apprehended the message, effective communication takes place. Because communication has many meanings to individuals, it is important to make it clear and concise so the message from the sender would not get lost. In this paper, I will discuss a definition of health care communication, the relevancy of effective personal health care communication with other health care professionals, clients, and patients, the relevancy of effective professional health care communication to health outcomes, how the lack of effective personal and professional health care communications contributes to poor health outcomes, the theories and principles of therapeutic communication in health care settings for the health care professional. Definition of Health Care Communication According to Northhouse and Northhouse (1998), health communication is a subset of human communication that is concerned with how individuals deal with health-related issues. Health care communication can be a transaction of information between health care professionals and clients related to health issues. It improves patient satisfaction scores and outcomes if communication is using appropriately.
