It is a way for professionals to embody and project change, to make a difference. Furthermore, the main focus of this paper is to define health care communication with emphasis on the relevancy of effective personal health care communication with other health care professionals, clients, and patients. It will also discuss the relevancy of effective professional health care communication to health outcomes as well as how the lack of effective personal and professional health care communications can contribute to poor health outcomes. The theories and principles of therapeutic communication in health care settings for the health care professional will also be incorporated. Definition of Health Care Communication According to the Centers for Disease Control and the National Cancer Institute, health care communication is "The study and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual decisions that enhance health."
Communication is the art of exchanging information between two parties. The information is often in form of words, voice intonation and body language (Carson & Bain, 2008 pg 36). Effective communication does not entail talking only, but should also ensure the positive wellbeing of the agents that are linked towards the communication process (Cohen et al, 2010 pg 44). Professionals in the health and social care need to have effective communication skills for developing and maintaining positive and healthy social relationships and information sharing within the health care premises (Fairbanks & Candelaria, 2009 pg 132). Understanding effective communication and the interpersonal relation skills begins with knowing the contexts of communication, forms of communication, interpersonal interactions, communication and language needs which includes preferences (Mcsherry, 2012, pg 24).

Health care communication in intrapersonal context refers to the inner thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and our self-talk about issues that influence our health directed behaviors (Northouse & Northouse, 1998. p.4). Personal communication is vital in health care communication, starting from the first encounter with the patient throughout the care and treatment phase or hospitalization. The conversation with patients and families tells much about the way they feel.
Perspective on Health Care: Health Care Experience Health Care Experience Information from the Introduction to the Health Professions, chapter one, which applies to professional experience would be the advancement of technology and the change in health care philosophy. In my experience the advances in Health Information Technology (HIT) have created positive outcomes to the patient experience. With the focus on patient-centered care, the use of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) allows healthcare providers to collect, store, retrieve, and transfer information electronically (Cliff, 2012). Additionally, the change in philosophy that health care is a right that everyone should have (Stanfield, Cross, & Hui, 2009), has also changed the practice of requesting health coverage information upon arrival to the Emergency Department, which I work. This change in philosophy and the advancement of technology by using EMR’s are two major changes I have encountered professionally in my 15 year career.

I will also be talking about two theories of communication (Tuckman and Argyle) and how they help service providers to have a better communication. Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages. One example of interpersonal interaction is facial expressions, in a health and social care setting, showing that you are happy and smiling will show patients and service users that you are approachable and it will make them feel comfortable talking to you about their problems. Another example of interpersonal interaction is body language, in a health and social care setting, showing a good use of body language by having a good posture and engaging with the patients is good as it will also make patients and service users feel comfortable around you.

Staying informed on health topics and health challenges make me a better woman, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and one day soon a health care service worker. Having information on health care will enhance my level of communication when I enter the field, but also make me better able to interact with my doctor and other health care professionals on my health. Often my interest in health care is driven by staying current on health issues to maintain the quality of my life or to learn about conditions to help those around me. Having lost a close friend way to young, I am determined to live a healthy, full, and meaningful life.
