The way technology has driven the last half of a century has changed life astronomically. Everyday people crave and desire the next big thing on the market. Whether it is the hybrid car or touch screen phone, the need for something more leaves room in life for unhappiness when those items are not obtained. We may not know the same subjects as previous generations, but we are adapting to the ever changing world around us. Calling us the “Dumbest Generation” is a bit harsh considering that our generation and previous generations were taught in different societies. Our generation is the generation of technology, while the generations before us weren’t exposed to the technologies of today. Of course, no generation is going to admit to being less educated than another generation. Each generation would consider themselves the smartest, but to others that might seem farfetched.
That before we know it our appliances will be smarter than us one day and that’s not how man intended life to be; humans are supposed to be on top. Not every parent has the financial Stability to send their kids to schools with great education programs, as shown in waiting for Superman. So why should the innocent children be the ones being punished for something they Have no control over? By having more well educated people in the world it will make the environment a better place. The future needs to be thought about while changes and problems are being addressed. The school board and the people within the school systems need to have more caring feelings about those students who are being left behind.
Technology majorly impacted societal development in Vernor Vinge’s Rainbows End. In the novel, children understand technology better than adults, but have little understanding of important skills such as critical thinking and writing. These are skills that the elderly generation retains; however, the elderly have little understanding of technology. This technology benefits the society in many ways, but in order to receive these benefits people have made sacrifices and risk major security threats. In Rainbows End, children were raised using technology.
Our society today is very technologically advanced and not utilizing those technologies will only put us at a disadvantage.
