REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ECE 205 Introduction to Child Development a. What has impacted your learning the most throughout this course? This course has impacted my knowledge of how important changes are that occur when a child grows and develops. This includes being physically healthy, mentally alert, emotionally sound, socially competent and ready to learn. As per research the first three years are critical in the shaping of a child’s brain construction and early experiences is the base of the brain’s organizational development leading throughout life.
Considering the work of key pioneers and current experts with links to child development theory. There are many theories about how children learn and develop. This area of study is called developmental psychology which covers subjects such as cognitive, language and emotional development. The research methods are based heavily on the on going assessments carried out by observing children over a period of time. Assessment is part of the process of understanding what children know, understand and can do so that future teaching steps can be appropriately planned.
1.4 Explain common barriers to integrated working and multi-agency working and how these can be over come. Multi-agency working brings together practitioners from different sectors and professions to provide an integrated way of working to support children, young people and families. It is a way of working that ensures children and young people who need additional support have exactly the right professionals needed to support them. Integrated working focuses on enabling and encouraging professionals to work together effectively to deliver effective care for children. Children in their early years may have a range of needs and the way that we work together as practitioners can have a positive impact on their health, development and learning.
The influences that repeatedly are being applied are examples such as partnership with parents. This is something within my setting that we are constantly trying to improve. We believe to have effective working partnership with parents and carers it provides the best care for the child, enabling them to learn and develop. McMillan was not the only pioneer who was a firm believer of this other examples include Froebel and Issacs. Wolfendale acknowledges that “the value of partnership with parents has been recognized since it was stated in the plowden report (1967) that by involving parents the children may be helped and the fact that many settings now routinely work closer with parents.” Brudenell, Kay (2008, p274) I believe as time goes on the Ideologies and theories will continue to be put into our practice within working settings.
LEAD PACTICE IN PROMOTING THE WELL BEING AND RESILIENCE OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE. 1.1 A child`s well-being is of great importance and Understanding what affects children’s subjective well-being is vital if they are to be encouraged and supported to be active participants in society, their community and family. The evidence shows that a low level of subjective well-being is associated with a wide range of social and personal problems. Children need to be given the conditions to learn and develop. This includes cognitive and emotional development, fostered through access to play in the early years and high quality education in school, and physical development, for example through a nutritious diet.
Proven Benefits of Early Childhood Interventions The purpose of this article is to show the effects of early childhood intervention in the early years of a child’s life. Early childhood intervention programs intervene in situations where poor outcomes that can impair healthy development in a child. These programs provide support for parents, child, and family members as a whole whether it be by learning activities for the child, training and encouraging parents, and enhancing the caregiving environment. The key benefits of early childhood intervention program benefits are in academic achievement, behavior, educational progression, delinquency and crime reduction, and success in the workforce. These programs also have benefits in health and reduce child maltreatment, behavior, cognition, and emotional.
Unit 070 Promoting Wellbeing. 1. Identify the factors that impact on outcomes and life chances for children and young people. Life chances and outcomes of a young person are largely affected by the opportunities and input afforded to them by their parents, directly and indirectly, throughout childhood. These factors include socio-economic characteristics, such as, parental income, socio-economic status and parental education.
The role and responsibilities of an early years practitioner pursue a number of codes of practice and declares how you conduct yourself. When working with children a number of codes of practices exist. Such as Special needs, Safeguarding children, Children's learning, Behavior, Working with parents, Data protection etc. The early years practitioner has understandable responsibilities, like: Working to the principals of the sector and codes of confidentiality, learning the needs of a child, providing a warm, welcoming and exciting atmosphere, working hand in hand with the parents and partners and last but not least working as part of a team that provides a superior service for both children and parents. The early year’s practitioner has to put the requirements of the children first, because this will help by keeping the children out of harm and keeping them protected.
Unit 2 2.3 Explain how theories of development and frameworks to support development influence current practice today. Theories of development and frameworks to support development have influenced today's early year curriculum models and directly contributed to the good practice of childcare practitioners ,ensuring that children are seen as individuals and that each child's individual needs are met so that appropriate developmental opportunities are provided. These theorists have laid the foundations for current developmental theories and are still widely used today.Theories of development are important for childcare workers to understand as they form the basis of today's curriculum approaches and have highlighted good practice in teaching and learning strategies such as PPI's,(personal learning programmes),the use of observations, inclusive practice and the importance of key workers for children. All of these ensure that the children's individual needs are being observed ,planned for ,extended, recorded and met by the childcare practitioner and when needed with multi agency professionals.Without the work of yesterday's theorists, today's understanding of child development would not be as it is.Frameworks give us a guide that enables us to view and meet the needs of each child in our care.Theorists such as Abraham Maslown (1908-1970),Jean Piaget (1896-1980) and Freud (1856-1939)played a vital role in developing today's early years curriculum which sees each child holistically and as an individual whose needs may differ from another child's.It is thanks to them that our practice today is inclusive, diverse and child centred. Maslown is best known for his theory of self actualisation.Maslow lists a hierarchy of needs .He believed that our most basic requirements must be met before we can progress onto higher needs.Maslows hierarchy is a helpful approach
2.2.2 • Describe with examples the kinds of influences that affect children and young people’s development including: a) Background, b)health, c) environment. There are many factors that can affect and influence the good development of children and adolescents as the background, health and environment. • Background.- . - It is important to know the characteristics of the family about the child's development such as, warmth, equal affection between parents and children, establish a proper relationship in terms of norms, habits, values, etc.., This creates a child behavior without conflict and have effective and positive development from childhood to adulthood. For example... there are children who have parents who care about meet all their needs and sometimes confused wanting to give the material to show affection to their children and believing that that is the kind of attention they need.
