In this he analysed research across many studies and concluded that immediate memory span is 7 therefore people can remember on average 7 musical notes/ words/ letters etc. and can also count up to 7 dots when they flash up on a screen but not much more than that. He also found that we can cope better when using the chunking method. The good thing about millers thoughts on chunking is that they were partially correct however, Cowan recently reviewed a variety of studies on capacity of short term memory and found that it is limited to about 4 chunks this suggest that the extent of knowledge that can be held in the short term memory isn’t
Outline and evaluate the multi-store model: g&l Shiffrin et al proposed the Multi-Store Memory model which is a structural model composing of 3 separate stores with information passing between stores in a linear way. The 3 stores are the Sensory memory (SM) , the Short-term memory (STM) and the Long-term memory (LTM). The sensory memory receives constant information from environmental stimuli through senses such as eyes, ears, nose, hands, tongue and remains in the sensory memory for very short-periods as it receives little attention. When attention is given to these stimuli, they are then passed onto the STM. Rehearsal maintains information in the STM however it is still vulnerable to being forgotten due to limited duration (decay) or being displaced by new incoming information due to limited capacity (displacement).
Evidenece supporting the MSM comes from Squire et al(1992) who noticed when long term memory is engaged the hippocampus was active but when the short term memory was engaged the prefrontal lobes were active. This supports the MSM of memory and shows different parts of the brain are used for different types of memory. Suggesting that the memory is split into different unitary stores. However contridicting this is Craik and Tulving's experiment where they gave participants a list of nouns and asked questions about the different words. There was 3 different types of questions; shallow proccessing questions 'is this word in capitals?
They asked participants to perform a reasoning task while simultaneously reciting outloud a list of six digits. If didgit span really is a measure of maximum STM capacity, participants would be expected to show in paired performance on the reasoning task because their STM would be ocupied retaining the 6 digits. However, they found that participants made very few errors on either the reasoning or digit span task, although the speed of veryfying the sentences was slightly slower than when the task was done alone. Baddeley and Hitch concluded that the STM must have more than 1 component and must be involved in processes other than simple storage; eg, reasoning, undestanding and learning. The working memory model consists of four parts: episodic buffer, phonological loop, central executive and visio spatial sketchpad; The episodic buffer is a fairly recent addition to the working memory model.
If the material is sufficiently rehearsed, it is then passed on to the long-term memory. Once there it can stay there for a lifetime although it can be lost through damage to the brain and/or through the process of decay or interference. The long-term memory has unlimited capacity and information is moved from the short-term memory to the long-term memory by rehearsal. In terms of the multi-store model, rehearsal has an important part to play. It increases the time information can be held in STM and it is vital for transferring information to LTM.

While Gantt’s original chart was for the control of repetitive manufacturing, today simpler forms of Gantt charts are more widely used in services, where routings are short and queues have few chances to form. 3 In goods production, Gantt charts may be usable if: 1.
c. They inhibit GABA. d. They are 100% effective in treating bipolar disorder. 86. An advantage of bright light therapy for SAD, as compared to other antidepressant treatments, is that bright light therapy: a. is highly effective without apparent side effects. b. produces a permanent cure after one or two treatments.
The central executive controls attention, and is involved in planning and synthesizing information from the other two 'slave systems'. The central executive can also process information from any modality. Also, the central executive has a limited capacity, making it a “finite mental work space” as it's unable to accomplish too many processes at once. This idea is supported by the dual task experiment, where participants were given two tasks to accomplish simultaneously. The first task used the central executive in the form of a simple sentence verification task.
The role of encoding and retrieval I used in the numbers test derives from chunking the numbers in pairs or triple digits. I have always found this method it to be much easier to remember numbers such as, 96-15-77-48 or 96-157-748, rather than it is to remember 96157748. Chunking numbers comes naturally when it comes to remembering phone numbers and addresses. Sometimes chunks of numbers have special meaning, such as parts of a familiar phone number or address, my year of birth or numbers related to holidays like 1225 or 1031. When familiar chunks of numbers are spotted in an unfamiliar place these numbers are easy to remember.
There are quite a few criticisms of the MSM. One criticism is that it can be considered to be too simple a model. The MSM suggests that in our brains, we have one block for all our short term memory, and one block for all our long term memory. However, the case study of KF proves this to not be the case. After having a motorbike crash, KF lost a lot of his short term memory, but still had a little bit of functional short term memory.
