The book Outliers has made me see that the success people acquire is greatly influenced by luck. Yes they have worked hard, but the amount of time they have put into it as well as the opportunities they have been granted gave them the chance to reach the places they are today. A lot of circumstances they did not earn nor had control over gave them the chance to excel far beyond others. It just shows that you can give a million people the same talent and the same opportunities and not all of them will turn it into greatness. I never considered how the time in which you were born to be a great factor but outliers has brought that to my attention. I now look at the "successful" people I know and wonder how different their lives would be if the were born at a different times and the same goes for unsuccessful people. It makes me wonder what my hours, time of birth, and luck have in store for my future. It was very interesting to learn that the average amount of practice hours for success and to be an “outlier” is 10,000 hours. I didn’t know you could really calculate that many hours in a person’s life based on one activity or skill. To discover that if a person puts at least 10,000 hours into something they can become great at it and be one of the best was inspiring. It makes you see that dedication is really a staple whatever it is you want. You don’t have to born with some innate talent to become a remarkable being. You just have to stay focus and train. If you are willing to sit and practice something for 10,000 hours, how can you not become really good at it? For example, in the book it was said that the Beatles were not really good in the first few years as a band. It was going to Hamburg, Germany and playing eight hours a night for seven nights a week that provided them with necessity to become better musicians. This experience is what prepared them for their
