The guys tried to distract me from the situation but it was all I could think about. As soon as I heard that shot, I just lost it. Knowing my best friend was gone forever was the hardest thing I ever had to face. I’m as lonely as ever without him, a piece of my heart is gone.
According to the story, the “trouble” with the man is that he is “without imagination” and therefore never speculates about “man’s place in the universe,” his “frailty in general,” or the fact that people are “able only to live within certain narrow limits of temperature.” Yet during his trek the man is confronted again and again by his weakness as a lone individual against the formidable power of nature in the form of the brutal cold. Each time he removes his gloves, the man is surprised at how quickly his fingers are numbed. He is also startled at how fast his nose and cheeks freeze, and he is amazed when his spittle freezes in midair before it ever hits the snow. When the man stops for lunch, his feet go numb almost as soon as he sits still, a fact that finally begins to frighten him. Even the dog—who is half-wild and thus closer to nature—feels “depressed” by the cold.
These were flash floods that caused the village to be shocked and un-prepared. These floods were among the most extreme ever experienced in Britain, as literally the whole village had be torn apart and obliterated. The peak flow was about 140 m’s cubed. This was an unexpected flood, and the chances of this happening again are very slim, the chance of this happening in any one year is 1/400. The heavy rainfall started falling at midday on the 16th August, and it was recorded that 5 inches fell in 8 hours.
The skillful shading and smooth finish of the petals draw attention to the vibrancy of the flowers. The contrast between the dark shades in the middle of the flower shows the depth & detail to the painting. As an artist she liked to balance the picture in all ways, so that if the painting was to be folded in half, both sides would be about the same. The scale of the painting is amazing. She truly believed in painting the flower close up to show the full detail, instead of painting a flower to the true scale whereas you would only see a tiny flower.
Its bowl-like geography causes an entrapment of fog, air pollution and much of the horrible heat waves that are present during summer months. The San Joaquin Valley is hot and dry in summer with long, sunny days. Winters are moist and often blanketed with heavy fog. Due to San Joaquin Valley’s geography Tule fog is often a problem during the winter. Tule fog is a very thick fog that collects in parts of California during the rainy season of the late fall and winter.
I chose to write about this poem because of its refreshing change of pace. The speaker is so excited about getting out of bed and starting the morning that it made me smile at my own past, reminiscing on the days when I had no responsibilities but to enjoy my morning jo and to “catch up “ with friends, the order of my home and projects that brought me peace. Though when I read this poem, it was the middle of the night and I was overwhelmed with responsibilities, the tone brought me immediately to an emotion of happiness – as if I were there instead. “But mostly buzzing around the house on espresso” (line 12) made me laugh because my happy mornings always have a wonderfully flavored coffee (not small) to get the day started right. “Dictionary and atlas on the rug, the typewriter waiting for the key of the head” (line 13-14) gave me a sense of limitless possibilities waiting for me in each day.
In their descriptions and interactions, Steinbeck shows the men's relationship: George takes care of Lennie, who is childlike and mentally handicapped, constantly giving him advice and instructions: Don't say anything tomorrow when we get to the ranch; come back here if there is any trouble; don't drink the water before you check out its quality; don't touch dead animals. But George also realizes that Lennie cannot remember or follow these simple instructions. George also carries Lennie's work card, knowing that Lennie would lose it. What George does not realize is how potentially dangerous Lennie is. All Lennie's transgressions thus far have been relatively minor: He has unintentionally killed a mouse and frightened the girl in Weed, but he has done so innocently.
This situation is repeated when Candy walks pass looking for Lennie and expresses to Lennie “this is the first time I ever been in his room”, which triggers Crook to invite him in too as he follows on to say “You can come in if you want”. The sense of eagerness is repeated which shows he longs for company which is further hinted as he says “A guy goes nuts if he’s lonely.” Loneliness and Isolation is something Crooks is used to, structurally speaking, section 4 starts and ends by Crooks rubbing oil on his back, alone. The sense of isolation is emphasized with the fact that throughout the whole book of Of Mice and Men there is only one section on Crooks, and the whole section focuses on him which brings up awareness of segregation which was at its peak at the time towards black
The reason why it was only them two together was because they had no family and no other friends that would be able to tolerate or handle them. In the text Lennie had wanted George to tell him how their relationship was. He said “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family...”(Steinbeck 13). After George explained, Lennie clearly stated that “But not us!
It would seem that every character that we are introduced to in Steinbeck’s novella are indeed crippled in some way. There are the emotionally crippled, like George. There are mental and physical cripples, like Lennie and Candy. Then there are those who are crippled both physically and emotionally, such as the luckless Crooks. Throughout the story, we never really get a grasp of any sort of happiness in these people’s lives, so for these bleak men and women, an equally bleak ending seems almost unavoidable, if not expected.
