Plastic Soup Two and a half million plastic bottles will be used by the end of this week, ten billion plastic bags will be used worldwide, and in one year we will create enough plastic film to shrink wrap the state of Texas. Where does all that plastic end up? The majority of will end up floating on the top and bottom of our oceans. In just this year, 100,000 marine mammals and two million sea birds will die after feeding or being caught in plastic debris. Every square mile of the ocean surface off the North East coast of the U.S. has more than 46,000 pieces of plastic. Tons of marine mammals are affected yearly because of plastic in oceans including, sea turtles, seals, and sea lions. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and die from internal blockages and, seals and sea lions starve after being muzzled by six-pack rings or entangled by nets. The facts are devastating we are heavily dependent of plastic and the problem with that is most of the world doesn’t dispose of it appropriately. Plastic disposal in our oceans is becoming a fast problem that needs to be addressed by every individual on the planet. Plastic in the ocean is a devastating epidemic that is threatening our planet with every plastic bottle that to make its way to the recycle bins, becoming a problem for marine animals, humans, and is an issue that we can easily help. Seabirds, sea turtles, fish, and marine mammals often feed on plastic debris that they mistake for food. Ingesting this plastic kills marine mammals. Whales and sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for squid, and birds often mistake plastic pellets for fish eggs. Animals will also accidentally eat the plastic while feeding on natural food. Ingestion can lead to starvation or malnutrition when the marine debris collects in the animal's stomach causing the animal to feel full some plastics, contain toxic substances that can
