Obese Children in America Tracy Rodriguez Axia College of University of Phoenix Thesis Statement: Obese children in America may benefit from daily exercise and healthy eating habits incorporated into their days. Obesity in children is increasing at a mind boggling rate. But, beyond the obesity statistics there are real children who are facing real health issues with this all time high epidemic. My friend’s son Jonathan, a 12 year-old boy from a small town in Florida, is clinically obese. Jonathan and his mother are just beginning to face the fact that he has very real health risks. We are so busy, and the fast food industry has made it so convenient, and inexpensive to drive through, and pick up breakfast, lunch, or dinner while we are on the go. Not enough exercise and eating too much fast food and too much junk food are not the only factors contributing to the major rise in childhood obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that energy imbalance, calories consumed, calories burned, the environment as well as genetics are all links to obesity in children (par. 3). When the number of calories being consumed does not equal the number of calories being burned and the child gains weight this is called energy imbalance (par. 4). And with all the extremely high calorie, high fat foods this is becoming extremely difficult for children to avoid. If parents would limit a child’s access to fast food and junk food and limit their time watching television and playing video games this would help decrease the obesity rate in children. These foods are loaded with sodium, calories and fat and are very sparse in nutrients. Children who are obese suffer not only from physical health effects but from psychological effects as well. When a child is overweight they are much more likely to be bullied and teased both at school and at home. When a child is continually being teased for being overweight they are much more likely to become depressed and develop low self-esteem. Stress is not only a cause of obesity in a child, it is also a side effect of being overweight. According to Common SenseMedia, a child who is obese when they are younger have a higher percentage rate of developing diabetes, elevated blood pressure, asthma, high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer and stroke (par. 2). With the increase in portions children are eating so much more than they used to. And with the technological takeover of our children’s lives these extra calories are not being burned and is being stored as fat in their little bodies.
