Nursing school opened new horizons for my community involvement. Previous year I volunteered for Red Cross Blood Drive and obtained valuable experience in helping others with blood donations. This year I decided to volunteer at Open Door Health Clinic, Muncie, Indiana. I thought being almost graduate nursing student would expand my current experience level at other healthcare setting. Open Door is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center which provides comprehensive primary, urgent, and preventative healthcare to individuals and families through East Central Indiana regardless of their health insurance status, such as Medicare or Medicaid, disability claims, or other government-sponsored programs.

The main influence is my mother; she is a nurse at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Also through out high school I took anatomy and AP biology, these courses were very interesting and I enjoyed taking them. Taking anatomy furthered my interest in the human body and how this amazing machine functions. To get 200 hours of community service I volunteered at Mary immaculate Hospital for two summers. Being in the hospital environment was thrilling; I was excited that I had the opportunity.
MY Nursing Philosophy Philosophy is defined in the dictionary as the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.” Philosophies of nursing are statements of beliefs about nursing and expressions of values in nursing that are used as bases for thinking and acting” (Chitty and Black, 2007, p.319). For as long as I can remember, nursing has been my lifelong dream. I longed to be part of becoming a nurse to represent the very essence of caring and compassion. In my eighteen years of being in healthcare I have watched the changing of simple writing care plans to technology take over with computerized charting. I continue to desire to be a qualified, caring, and compassionate nurse to community that I live in.
As a high school student I dreamed of obtaining my Bachelors of Science in Nursing and as a graduate I will strive to obtain my masters and someday even a doctoral degree. I want to be the best that I can be at any level and will work hard to excel in any situation that comes my way. As a family nurse practitioner I will be lucky enough to be able to provide care for all age groups of patients and families. I would like to work in a setting where I can work with various populations such as a community clinic or even a primary care physician’s office. Some other goals that I am working towards or have achieved include certifications such as; ACLS, PALS, CCRN, and a bachelors degree in Spanish language.
I plan to finish my degree in one year. In the long term my goal is to apply to the University of South Alabama where I intend to finish my doctorate degree with a focus in neonatal nurse practitioner. After I finish my doctorate, I plan to work in the NICU where I currently work as a nurse. In the thirteen years I have been at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, I have learned a great deal from the Neonatologists and the NNP’s. One of the NNP’s that I have worked closely with throughout the years has agreed to be my mentor in my journey to become a NNP.
For the past several years I have known almost every detail of what I plan to do after high school. I have always been extremely passionate with helping those in need, and caring for other people. This, and the fact that my mother is a registered nurse, has led me to believe that pursuing a medical degree is what I am meant to do with my life. I have always loved school and always wanted to be important to those around me, and I feel as though being someone who cares whole-heartedly for those who are sick and ill, is a perfect way to express my passion for helping those in need. I came to the conclusion of joining the medical field several years ago after my first serious injury.
After careful re-evaluation of my long term goals and values, nursing is the obvious career path for four reasons: First, I consider nursing an altruistic career that, when coupled with my diverse background, will help me be more effective at improving those lives of whom I come in contact. Second, since my return from service in the Peace Corps and influence from friends and family in the medical field, I have developed an interest in disease prevention and how diet and environment affects the body. Third, attending a Christian university will deepen my spiritual insight so that I may practice nursing with integrity and compassion. Lastly, I believe a career in nursing will allow me to provide a good standard of living for my family. Over all, I hope to impress upon the admissions committee that my decision to pursue a second Bachelor’s of Science degree from USF will be more fulfilling because it aligns well with my values, goals and
After I graduated from nursing school, I worked as a nurse in Medical -Surgical, Neurology and Cardiac Care. In addition I have worked as a faculty in a nursing undergraduate program. During my tenure as a Medical-Surgical nurse I sought to increase my knowledge and skills. I further explored my calling as a nurse by transitioning to a critical care which increased my knowledge base and clinical skills. My career is challenging and has led me to contemplate pursuing an advanced degree in nursing and particularly the CRNA specialty.
