Skills in how to communicate effectively with both the pediatric patient and their parents are important for a nurse to foster to maintain good therapeutic relationships. Person centred care becomes family centred care when babies and children are the patients. The dependent nature of the patient increases the need for parental responsibility and advocacy for the child. It is important for all members of the family to be taken into account when nursing a pediatric patient, especially the primary caregivers and siblings. Chochinov, 2007 (cited in Cornwell & Goodrich, 2009), states simply that compassion is ‘a deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it.’ Pediatric patients and their families are highly sensitive to the compassionate nature of health care professionals and a successful therapeutic relationship with them depends on the sensitive, compassionate care offered by the nurse.

It has been suggested that many new mothers will not disclose feelings of low mood due to the perceptions a health professional may have if she does. Edhborg (2005) suggested women who are depressed after giving birth often struggle with tremendous guilt over their depression and believe that it means they are a bad mother, this inhibits their likelihood to disclose feelings of low mood to a practitioner. I have seen mothers react after presentation of the Whooley questions, with a sheepish “No” on occasion.

Throughout this entire book there are several healing resources that can help you cope with your crisis. I enjoyed reading this book because the authors provided clear explanations that I could understand they gave realistic ideas and mapped out the steps to take for healing. I would do a mental exam on her to determine the severity of the Alzheimer’s. - Clinician Characteristics To be best able to work with Mrs. Sanders I would have to show her that I cared, show empathy, as well as a desire to help her. I would have to be able to motivate her and promote her continued independence. I would need to be structured, creative, and positive to help her find ways to deal with the Alzheimer’s.

The YWCA offers many resources to women that find themselves battling abuse and many other resources for women and children. Since domestic violence in a frequent problem in families the YWCA also offers transitional housing for women and children which includes private rooms, HUD subsidize, and childcare to the women that live there. The YWCA mission and vision is “YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all” www.ywcancin.org. They also offer groups that focus on chemical dependency, economic empowerment, and sexual assault. Because they offer so many resources I decided to focus on the domestic violence program and explore the group and it foundation.
Children may also be more likely to be born with handicaps because of problems or change in the mothers reproductive organs as a result of previously having an abortion. Not only can there be significant physical damages to a mother, but their can also be severe psychological damages as well. Post abortion depression is extremely common among women. Women who have aborted their fetuses may experience anything that ranges from mild depression, to suicidal thoughts, and in extreme cases, actual suicide. This proves that abortion can be detrimental to both a woman’s physical and mental health.
