And I was glad that Rabbi Eliahou should continue to look for his beloved son. And, in spite of myself, a prayer rose in my heart, to that God in whom I no longer believed. My God, Lord of the Universe, give me strength never to do what Rabbi Eliahou’s son has done.” From that point on, he made it his duty to take care of his father. So, what is love you ask? Love is many things that you can describe a thousand different ways.
The war had greatly impacted his father’s personality, attitude and parenting style. Therefore Spiegelman’s personality and lifestyle were then influenced by his father's personality and parenting style. His father loved showing off how handy he was since that was one of his survival methods during the war. This made Spiegelman fearful to fix things because he was being compared to his father. Spiegelman felt he was always over shadowed by his father regardless of his own accomplishment because his father survived the war and he could not compete with that.
But, his dad was getting beat up and him or his dad could not move. And when his dad disappears over night, he did not care about life anymore. He cared for his dad to a great extent. Also, when the dentist wanted his gold crown out of his mouth. He did not want to go so he made up an excuse not to get it removed.
Levi worked in this laboratory helping in the production of synthetic rubber and to broaden his knowledge on chemistry. By working in this laboratory, Levi avoided the outdoor manual labor that came along with the below freezing temperatures of winter. (“Primo Levi.” http://en.wikipedia.org, 1) While being an aid in the laboratory, Levi fell ill with scarlet fever and was taken to the camp sanatorium. (“Primo Levi.” http://en.wikipedia.org 1) This was the time that the Russians, also known as the Red Army, were headed towards Auschwitz, which meant that all the camp prisoners were to evacuate in a death march; this did not include the prisoners in the sanatorium. When the Russians were getting closer, the Nazi’s were ordered to kill all of the prisoners that were left, but luckily for Levi, they were terrified and fled instead.
What he sees really plays a major role of his psyche, and how he begins to treat others. As the novel gets closer and closer to its end Eliezer’s whole attitude toward his father changes, where in the beginning he wants to stick to his father for safety and comfort, near the end he tries to distance himself from his father thinking that sticking with him is cutting his chance of survive. So he faces the hard reality of wanting to leave his father for dead just so he can live. One point in the novel that Elie says that will stay with him is on how he didn’t try to help his father when he was calling him to help him when he was being beaten by other prisoners. Adam has finally has his father and son moment with one of his children that he is grateful to express himself to his son Cal. By saying he trusts Cal he has gain even more love and forgiveness for not being with his children for many years. Plus, Adam is able to not be like his father but instead be the opposite with just one of his children. Cal – “He though sardonically of telling him about his mother, to see how he would handle I, but he withdrew the though quickly. He didn’t think Aron could handle it at all,” (Steinbeck 586).
Stories, pictures, and even music trace the culture and memories of each home. While some cultures may focus upon the survival of the family, others focus on their beliefs and important motifs that underly the religion. Such appears the case in Night by Elie Wiesel. In this well-refined memoir, Elie describes his father as a well known and respected man of his Jewish community, emphasizing his knowledge and power. But suddenly, this man who believed in an answer to every question, God being the supreme in knowledge, is stripped of his identity, family, and home right in front of his eyes.
“Night,” by Elie Wiesel, is a novel of young Wiesel’s survival in the concentration camps during WWII .The overall theme of Night is faith. In 1941, a 12 year old boy named Eliezer Wiesel. He lives in Sighet Transylvania, and he belonged to an Orthodox Jewish family. His dad is a shopkeeper, and his family is highly respected within Sighet's Jewish community. Against his father’s will, Eliezer is into learning religious mysticism such as the Kabbalah.
The story is told from Elie’s point of view. As the story progressed Elie grow stronger, not only physically but emotionally and mentally as well. His role as a worker in a concentration camp helped him survive. Some may say he got lucky and some might say it was his faith. Although Towards the end of the book he lost his faith in god the only reason he kept pushing and worked harder to survive was because of his father.
Dylan Thomas, “ Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.” In life, some people are unfortunate to have to experience the death of a loved one. Losing someone you love can be unconceivable to some people, as they can’t imagine losing that person at all. In Dylan Thomas’ poem, “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.”, he is going through the unconceivable in having to watch a loved die. He goes through having to watch his father go through a very slow death. But in hind’s sight, he wants his father to fight for his life and not give in.
