Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America is a book written by Barbara Ehrenreich. This book was about how Ehrenreich goes undercover and works at many different jobs for minimum wage. She tried to find housing and food with the small amount of wage, and finds out that it does not work well. One of the major themes of this book is poverty. This book sets out to investigate the impact of the 1966 welfare reform act on the “working poor” in the United States. Ehrenreich started out with a fund of money and a car. She got a waitress job in Key West and tried to get an apartment and food with her small wage. She was amazed at how some people are able to do it, and didn’t realize how hard it was. "There are no secret economics that nourish the poor; on the contrary, there are a host of special costs. If you can't put up the two months' rent you need to secure an apartment, you end up paying through the nose for a room by the week…you eat fast food or the hot dogs and Styrofoam cups of soup that can be microwaved in a convenience store . . .you go without routine care or prescription drugs and end up paying the price."
