Michael Jordan went on to attend college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was an all-star player. He went on t0 be drafted to the NBA. The NBA website states, “By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time”. He became known as “Air Jordan”, because he could jump very high and put the basketball in the net. Michael Jordan retired from the NBA in 1993 and came back to play in 1995 and retired again in 1999.
Early in the NBA’s existence, the NBA and the NBA Players Association (NBAPA) followed a rule that prevented an athlete from being drafted until four years after he had graduated from high school. It wasn’t until 1971 that the rule was challenged in federal court by a 19-year old named Spencer Haywood. Haywood was raised in extreme poverty roughly an hour outside of Jackson, Mississippi. A talented basketball player, as a teenager, he helped the 1968 United States Olympic basketball team win a gold medal. Then in 1970, just three years out of high school, Haywood signed a six-year contract with the Seattle Supersonics worth $15 million.
Phil won the 1996 NBA coach of the year award. Phil Jackson was first hired as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls after he graduated from the Universty of North Dakota. He was then promoated to head coach in 1989 and coached the team untill 1998. Jackson took a year off, then joined with the Lakers in 1999. Phil Jackson uses kinestitic, visual, verbal, and interpersonal intllegences in his career.
In the mid 80’s, Nike began designing basketball shoes differently. In 1984 a young man by the name of Michael Jordan who was 21 years old at the time was drafted third in the first round of the NBA draft pick. In the NBA there are two players who have been given this title. The two players are Dwight Howard and Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq has been playing longer so he has better stats for his career, but he still can’t fly. Dwight Howard has the edge in many categories, such as athleticism.
Now we can add Michael Jordan name to the list of players I just named. Jordan is being inducted into the Hall of Fame today due to his great basketball skills on the court and all of the things he accomplished in fifteen seasons in the NBA. As a child Jordan basketball career had some ups and downs. According to ESPN, “during his sophomore year at Laney, a 5’9 Michael Jordan tried out for the basketball team. He was passed over for the final spot on the varsity team.” He took that as motivation and dominated on the junior varsity team.
Shortly after the tournament, Coach K. was forced to take a ten-month break from coaching because he underwent back surgery, but he returned to lead the Blue Devils into three more NCAA tournaments in 1996, '97 and '99. This game was actually a victory against the Los Angeles Lakers it is eing said that this victory is to be given to Whiteside. The 25-year-old, who was playing in the D-League in November, had 18 points and 25 rebounds, including seven points and five rebounds in those final crucial three minutes. Whiteside now has four games this season with at least 20 rebounds, which already puts him at second in franchise history for that accomplishment. Rony Seikaly had 20 or more rebounds 21 times during this career.
Overall, the degree to which basketball has advanced over the years is amazing and has become one of the major sports all over the world. The game of basketball was first invented in 1891 by Dr. James A. Naismith (Laughead). While holding the position as a physical education instructor at a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith was given the challenge of developing a game that could be played inside during the winter months. Additionally, he wanted to create a game that required a certain degree of skill rather than one that relied primarily on strength. After only two weeks of thinking, he came up with the basic concepts that would later define the rules of basketball.
